Born April 16, 1995, in Berkeley, California, Mackenzie “Mackie” McDonald was introduced to tennis already at the age of three. Now known for his quick footwork and versatile all-court game.
Turning pro in 2016 after a stellar college career at UCLA, where he won the 2016 NCAA Division I singles and doubles titles, McDonald reached a junior peak of No. 12, with a 2012 Australian Open boys singles semifinal.
His breakthrough came in 2018, reaching the Wimbledon fourth round as World no 103, defeating Nicolas Jarry and Guido Pella. In 2021, he reached his first ATP final at the Washington Open, losing to Jannik Sinner, and was named ATP Comeback Player of the Year after recovering from 2019 hamstring surgery.
His biggest win came at the 2023 Australian Open, defeating Rafael Nadal, his first Top 5 victory. In 2025, ranked No. 88, he reached the National Bank Open second round in Toronto, defeating David Goffin 2-0 before losing to Jiri Lehecka, and won his second ATP doubles title in Atlanta with Diego Schwartzman.
