By October half my customers migrate indoors and a handful will arrive at the counter with the same complaint: their outdoor shoes either grip so hard on the carpet that it feels like they’re going to roll an ankle or they’re getting marks on the court and a polite note from the club. Indoor tennis is played on a variety of surfaces, so the shoe that’s right on one can be all wrong on another.
In the UK most indoor courts are either textile carpet or acrylic hardcourt with the odd wooden sports hall floor thrown in. A good all-court shoe with a non-marking sole is fine on acrylic. On carpet you want a smooth, flat “carpet” or “indoor” sole that lets you slide a touch and twist without the shoe biting, which is kinder on your knees and ankles. So I’ve ranked the indoor and the carpet-specific ones that I would point players to first, and I’ve been clear about what each gives up.
| Rank | Shoe | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | K-Swiss Express Light 3 Carpet | Light, low and quick | All-round winter carpet shoe |
| 2 | HEAD Sprint Pro 4.0 Carpet | Light and fast | Quick, light-footed movers |
| 3 | ASICS Gel-Challenger 15 Carpet | Stable and cushioned | Extra support |
| 4 | Babolat SFX Evo Carpet | Plush and roomy | Comfort and wider feet |
| 5 | K-Swiss Hypercourt Express 2 Carpet | Cushioned and flexible | Maximum cushioning |
1. K-Swiss Express Light 3 Carpet
Specs:
- Sole: Smooth carpet outsole, for indoor carpet courts only
- Versions: Men’s and women’s
- Feel: Light, low and quick

The Express Light has always been K-Swiss’s lighter, faster shoe and the carpet version keeps that low, nimble feel with a sole built for indoor carpet. It’s the easiest carpet shoe to find in the UK right now, with men’s and women’s versions in stock at the main online retailers, and at around £80 to £100 it’s not silly money for a shoe you’ll mostly wear from October to March.
It’s a light comfortable shoe that lets you move freely on carpet with none of the sticky grabbing feel of an outdoor sole. A little downside is that it’s a mid-range shoe, not a heavyweight stability model so big, heavy movers might want more support. Like every carpet shoe it’s indoor only.
Best for: Club and league players looking for a lightweight, affordable shoe for winter carpet tennis.
2. HEAD Sprint Pro 4.0 Carpet
Specs:
- Sole: Carpet outsole (sold as Sprint Pro 4.0 Carpet or Indoor depending on the retailer)
- Versions: Men’s (women’s equivalent is the Sprint Team 4.0 Carpet)
- Feel: Light and fast, EVA midsole
HEAD’s speed shoe is the Sprint Pro. Tennisnerd did a write-up on the 4.0 when it was released in early 2025 as a lightweight shoe with a new EVA midsole foam. The carpet version gives you that same upper and midsole but puts it on a sole built for indoor carpet so you get a proper performance shoe instead of a cheap indoor afterthought.
The go-to for players who want to feel fast and low to the court indoors. The trade-offs are that the men’s carpet version is becoming harder to find in some sizes as retailers work through stock, and women need to look at the Sprint Team 4.0 Carpet, which sits a level below the Pro.
Best for: Fast, light-footed players seeking a performance speed shoe on carpet.
3. ASICS Gel-Challenger 15 Carpet
Specs:
- Sole: Carpet outsole
- Versions: Check UK size and gender availability before buying
- Feel: Stable and cushioned, GEL in the heel
ASICS has been making carpet versions of its mid-priced shoes for years and the Gel-Challenger is the one I see most at indoor centers. Tennis-Point lists the Gel-Challenger 15 Carpet in its indoor season round-up, and the previous Gel-Challenger 14 Indoor came with a smooth carpet sole, the PGUARD toe protector and ASICS’s WINGWALL sidewall for a bit of extra lateral support.
A great all rounder that is solid and stable for players looking for a little more support than the lighter K-Swiss or HEAD. The catch is availability – with the 14 being discontinued at some UK shops and the 15 Carpet not being stocked everyplace, you may have to shop around.
Best for: Players looking for a stable, cushioned carpet shoe with a little more support.
4. Babolat SFX Evo Carpet
Specs:
- Sole: Carpet outsole
- Versions: Men’s and women’s
- Feel: Plush, roomy and comfort-first
The SFX line is Babolat’s comfort line, and is built on a roomy last, so it also made my list of wide-feet options. The SFX Evo carpet provides that comfortable, forgiving fit indoors, and at around £85 RRP (often cheaper on sale) it’s one of the cheaper ways into a proper carpet sole from a big tennis brand.
It’s comfortable right away and it fits wide feet, which is rare in carpet shoes. It’s more of a club comfort shoe than one for chasing down drop shots, so you give up some speed and lockdown compared to the Sprint Pro or Express Light.
Best for: Club players with wider feet who want comfort on carpet.
5. K-Swiss Hypercourt Express 2 Carpet
Specs:
- Sole: Carpet outsole
- Versions: Check UK size and gender availability before buying
- Feel: Cushioned, flexible and comfortable out of the box
The Hypercourt Express has been a comfort favorite for years and the carpet version is another shoe retailers picks out for the indoor season. The carpet sole is described as being specially developed for maximum traction. The rest of the shoe maintains the soft, flexible upper that makes the Hypercourt so comfortable to wear.
If you want a little more cushioning than the Express Light and don’t mind a softer feel, this is a good shout. The trade-off: a bit of lateral lockdown from the soft build. It’s also an older model that’s getting harder to find as the Express 3 rolls out, so check stock first.
Best for: Comfort-first players who want a lot of cushioning indoors.
Other notables

- Diadora S.Challenge 6 SL Carpet: Another one from Tennis-Point’s indoor round-up, with a carpet sole aimed at traction. Worth a look if you like Diadora’s fit, though UK stock is patchier than K-Swiss or HEAD.
- ASICS Gel-Dedicate 8 Carpet: ASICS’s entry-level shoe with a carpet sole. A sensible budget pick for juniors and once-a-week players.
- K-Swiss Court Express 2 Carpet: The cheapest carpet shoe I found from a proper tennis brand, at around £70 RRP and often under £60, in men’s and women’s.
- Playing on acrylic indoors? You don’t need a carpet sole. A good all-court shoe with a non-marking outsole is the right call, and a carpet sole would actually feel slippy there. Just keep that pair indoor only, so you don’t bring grit onto the court.

Final thoughts
If your club plays on carpet, don’t wear your outdoor pair, buy a carpet sole shoe as it is safer for your joints and better for the court. An all-court, non-marking shoe will work on indoor acrylic.
- K-Swiss Express Light 3 Carpet: The best all-round pick, light, affordable and easy to find in men’s and women’s.
- HEAD Sprint Pro 4.0 Carpet: The performance speed shoe for quick movers.
- ASICS Gel-Challenger 15 Carpet: The stable, supportive choice if you can find your size.
- Babolat SFX Evo Carpet: The comfort pick, and the one for wider feet.
- K-Swiss Hypercourt Express 2 Carpet: Maximum cushioning, while stock lasts.
