About Prize Money in Tennis
In general, tennis players are compensated based on the round where you head out of the tournament. The numbers go up fast, the longer you managed to stay in the event. As an example, going out in the first round of Roland Garros pays €73,000 while if you win the tournament, you claim €2,400,000.
Singles usually pays significantly more than Doubles, however many players are participating in both formats.
Men vs Women
Most tournaments are now paying equal amounts to men and women, there are still some events on the tour where the men earn more though. In general, this is more common in the lower tours, but also true for some of the Masters 1000 and ATP 500 events.
Which Tournament has the Highest Prize Money?
As expected, the four Grand Slams pays high amounts of prize money as they also gives the most ranking points. Followed by Masters 1000, ATP500 and ATP250.
As an example, winning the French Open pays €2,400,000 while winning the ATP 250 tournament in Estoril gives €85,605.
Surprisingly though, even though the Slams are by far the most attractive tournaments, the most well paid event is the ATP Finals in the end of the year. In 2023 the winner (Novak Djokovic) claimed $4,8 million when he beat Sinner in the final.
Which Players Have Won the Most Prize Money in 2025?
For men’s and women’s tennis in the 2025 season (Year-to-Date):
Men’s (ATP Tour) Prize Money Leader:
- Carlos Alcaraz with approximately $16,048,017 (USD).
Women’s (WTA Tour) Prize Money Leader:
Aryna Sabalenka with approximately $12,313,519 (USD).
