ATP Basel 2026: Tournament Preview and Travel Info

Written by: Stefan Jonsson | October 26, 2026

The Swiss Indoors Basel is underway, bringing another week of indoor tennis to the St. Jakobshalle. The ATP 500 event runs from October 24 to November 1, with the main draw beginning on Monday, October 26. As one of the major stops in the late-season indoor swing, Basel offers a strong field, a lively atmosphere and conditions that should reward aggressive tennis.

This year’s edition also has a couple of especially interesting storylines. Novak Djokovic is back in Basel, while Swiss favourite Stan Wawrinka is playing the final tournament of his professional career (and he got a tough draw…). With the season approaching its conclusion, there is plenty at stake both for the established names and for players looking to finish the year strongly.

Players to Watch in 2026

Ben Shelton leads the draw, with Novak Djokovic among the biggest attractions. Djokovic is making his return to Basel for the first time since 2011 and is scheduled to begin his campaign on Wednesday.

The local spotlight will be on Stan Wawrinka. The three-time Grand Slam champion has chosen Basel as the final tournament of his career, giving Swiss fans a chance to celebrate one of their country’s most accomplished players on home soil. He finds himself in a very tough first round match against eighth seed Jiri Lehecka.

Other names to watch include Holger Rune, Casper Ruud and Arthur Fils. However, the draw has already been affected by withdrawals: Alexander Bublik, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Stefanos Tsitsipas have pulled out with physical issues. As always, check the latest order of play before planning around a particular player.

Here’s the 2026 ATP Basel Main Draw:

The Courts

Basel is played on indoor hard courts, and the historical numbers point towards relatively quick conditions.

Some of the tournament averages are listed below, which indicate fast courts:

  • 75.0% of points won on the first serve
  • 85.2% of service games held
  • 0.65 aces/game

The precise conditions can vary from year to year though.

A comment from Fritz last year: “I was actually shocked by how fast it is this year. I remembered it being quicker than Vienna, but it’s even faster than I thought. I like it, though. I’m excited to play in these conditions, and I’ve always really enjoyed this tournament.“

The recent winners also show that Basel can suit a range of attacking styles, from big servers to powerful baseliners.

Weather in Basel

Late October in Basel can bring cool temperatures, cloud and occasional rain. Forecast highs during tournament week are around 11–19°C, with colder nights.

For the tennis itself, the weather is not a major factor because the matches are played indoors. It matters more if you are travelling between the venue, your accommodation and the city centre. A warm layer and a rain jacket are sensible choices for getting around Basel this time of year.

Visiting Basel for the Tournament

The Swiss Indoors takes place at St. Jakobshalle, on the south-eastern edge of Basel. The venue is served by public transport, and taking a tram or bus is generally the simplest option for spectators.

St. Jakobshalle

Getting There

From Basel SBB, the main railway station, take tram 8, 10 or 11 to Aeschenplatz and change to tram 14 towards St. Jakob. From Basel Badischer Bahnhof, bus 36 travels directly to the St. Jakob stop.

Parking close to the venue is limited during the tournament. Organisers recommend following the event’s park-and-ride directions rather than relying on the nearby shopping-centre car park. Check the official transport information before travelling, as event arrangements and shuttle times can vary by day.

Where to Stay

Staying near Basel’s central railway station or in the city centre is a practical choice if you want to combine tennis with sightseeing and restaurants. The public transport connections make it possible to reach the arena without staying right beside it.

Accommodation can be in demand during a major sporting event, so check availability early if you’re planning a future visit. For this year’s tournament, compare your travel time to St. Jakobshalle as well as the room price.

What to See Beyond Tennis

Basel is worth exploring between sessions. The Old Town, Basel Minster and the Rhine waterfront are good places to start. The city also has a strong museum and cultural scene, making it a good destination for a short break even when the weather is cool.

If you are visiting primarily for tennis, leave enough time to get to the arena and enjoy the atmosphere before your session begins. The tournament has a sizeable public area with food and promotional stands, so you can make more of the visit than simply watching the matches.
