Is American Tennis Back?

Written by: GP | August 5, 2025

For years, American tennis seemed to be in a slump, with few players cracking the top ranks or lifting major trophies. The golden era of Agassi, Sampras and the Williams sisters faded, leaving a void through the 2010s. But in the last few years, a wave of young talent and veteran resilience is sparking talk of a comeback. But does this mean American tennis is truly back, and will we see another US Grand Slam win among the men soon?

The Dry Spell: A Look Back

The last decade saw sparse success for US players. After Sloane Stephens 2017 US Open win (and Madison Keys final), no American claimed a Grand Slam singles title until Coco Gauff’s 2023 US Open breakthrough. Men’s tennis struggled even more, Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open remains the last major win. By 2020, the ATP top 10 had no American men, and the WTA saw only Serena Williams (retired 2022) and Gauff as consistent threats. Rankings dipped, with the US relying on nostalgia rather than new champions.

The 2025 Turnaround

Nowadays American tennis is showing signs of life, which we can confirm in the odds and by checking tennis live score today. Coco Gauff, 21, holds steady at No. 2 in the ranks, with a good 2025 season featuring an impressive win at the Roland Garros where she beat world no 1 Aryna Sabalenka.

Taylor Fritz, 27, is ranked No. 4, after a season with greatly improved consistency, reaching at least the quarter-finals in all of the Masters 1000 events. Ben Shelton, 22, sits at No. 7 after a strong season, not at least on the hard-court swing.

On the women’s side, Jessica Pegula continues her good form with some deep runs and recently added her 7th WTA tour title at the ATX Open, while we see upcomer Amanda Anisimova at no 7 and Madison Keys at no 8.

Major tournaments reflect this uptick, even the Grand Slams. The Olympics last year saw Fritz and Paul lead the US to a doubles bronze, showing team depth. This contrasts with 2022, when no American man reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal, and women’s success was Gauff-centric. Prize money also reflects growth, where US tennis players almost doubles their earnings from majors since 2022.

Key Players Driving the Revival

  • Coco Gauff: Her 2023 US Open win as well as the 2025’s French Open title shows huge improvement on the highest level.
  • Taylor Fritz: A serve-and-volley standout, Fritz’s 69% service game win rate in 2025 tops Jannik Sinner’s 67% in their head-to-heads. His consistency in the biggest events on tour shows a steady progress.
  • Ben Shelton: The lefty’s serve, baseline game and overall added consistency mark him as a rising force, now in the top 10.

Currently, the ATP top 20 features four Americans (Fritz, Shelton, Tiafoe and Tommy Paul), up from one (Fritz) in 2023. The WTA top 20 includes five players (Gauff, Pegula, Anisimova, Keys and Navarro), a rise from two in 2022.

Several young players on the men’s side are climbing the ranks, look out for these names in the future: Alex Michelsen, Learner Tien, Nishesh Basavareddy, and Ethan Quinn.

American tennis is stirring back to life, Gauff’s and Fritz consistency at the very top among players, Shelton’s power and young, upcoming players like Alex Michelsen shows things are improving. The WTA’s four top 10 players outpace the men’s two, and no men’s Slam since 2003 looms large.
