Alex Michelsen’s tennis racquet is the Babolat Pure Aero 2023, however he might be using an older generation. Most likely the 2019 Pure Aero in the picture below, which had a more open pattern than the 2023 version.

Biography and Career

Alex Michelsen was born on August 25th, 2004 in Aliso Viejo, California. He hit his first tennis shots in his garage already at the age of three and says his mother Sondra was his biggest inspiration from the early days. This early practice has translated into one of his strongest weapons on the court – his backhand.

Turning pro in 2023, Michelsen bypassed college tennis despite having committed to the University of Georgia. This decision paid off as he began to climb the ranks. Here are some of the highlights of his career so far:

  • Challenger Success: In July 2023, Michelsen clinched his first Challenger title in Chicago, defeating Yuta Shimizu in the finals. This victory was a significant milestone, propelling him into the top 150 of the ATP rankings.
  • ATP Tour Finals: Alex reached his first ATP Tour final at the 2023 Hall of Fame Open in Newport, where he was unfortunately beaten by Adrian Mannarino. His performance there was enough to secure him a career-high ranking of No. 117 by September 2023.
  • Grand Slam Debuts: His Grand Slam debut came at the 2023 US Open where he received a wildcard entry and managed a first-round win against Albert Ramos Viñolas before being ousted by Nicolás Jarry in the second round.
  • 2024 Season: Michelsen continued to make progress in 2024, reaching another final at the 2024 Hall of Fame Open, showing also his great consistency on grass. His performance at the 2024 Australian Open was notable, where he reached the third round, becoming the youngest American man to do so at a Grand Slam since Donald Young in 2007.
  • Masters 1000 Debut: In 2024, he made his ATP Masters 1000 debut at Indian Wells, getting his first Masters win against Jaume Munar.
  • 2025 Australian Open: Michelsen’s breakthrough came with a stunning upset over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round, followed by victories against James McCabe and Karen Khachanov, leading him to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time. He eventually lost to home player Alex De Minaur.
