The 2024 tennis season is all done and dusted. Yet again, it was a fascinating year on the ATP and WTA Tours, with plenty of impressive performances and records broken. Join us as we take a look at some of the most interesting stats that took place in 2024.
- Match wins and matches played
We have to start with the win/loss record because it’s one of the simplest stats there exists in tennis. It shows just how dominant some players were and Jannik Sinner was incredibly dominant. The Italian finished the year with a 92.4% win percentage which is absurd, playing 79 matches and winning 73. And that’s not even counting the Six Kings Slam, where he went unbeaten across three matches as well.
On the women’s side of the sport, Iga Swiatek had the best win rate. The Pole finished the year with an 87.67% win percentage, winning 64 of 73 matches, including the BJK Cup. Sabalenka might have had a better year overall but Swiatek had the higher win percentage.
- Matches played
When it comes to the sheer volume of matches this year, Emma Navarro and Alexander Zverev led the way.
Navarro played 78 matches, while Zverev recorded 90 matches in total, including the Olympics, United Cup and Laver Cup.
- Bagels
Ah, the smell of fresh bread was in the air in 2024. There’s nothing quite like a 6-0 set – commonly known as a bagel in tennis. Some players had their bakery shops working more than others this season.
On the men’s side it was actually Alex de Minaur who finished this past season with eight 6-0 sets for the year. Second on that list was Novak Djokovic with five of those and then it’s a Sebastian galore with Sebastian Korda and Sebastian Baez with four. Sinner also had four but Carlos Alcaraz only had two.
On the women’s side where these things are a bit more common it’s still Swiatek at the top. She had 13 bagels this year closely followed by Coco Gauff who had 12. Qinwen Zheng is third on that list with eight 6-0 wins this year.
- Winning streak
One of the most memorable stats in tennis is a winning streak simply because it’s so hard to do. The sport is very fluid, you play at different venues, in different times and different countries every other week so being able to maintain that consistency is truly remarkable.
This year had some really notable win streaks. Sinner’s streak of 16 wins to begin the season was the longest on the ATP Tour. He only lost to Alcaraz in Indian Wells which snapped his win streak. He’s currently on a longer one (17) but that’s only if we count the Saudi exhibition. Take away those three wins and he’s not yet up to the 16 he had earlier in the year.
The second-best one was again from Sinner (15) over the summer which was snapped at Wimbledon by Medvedev. The third place is also Sinner who had a 14 match win streak before being beaten by Alcaraz in Beijing. Then finally comes Alcaraz with 12 wins in a row at one point in 2024.
On the women’s side it was Swiatek, who won 21 matches at one point. Behind her we have Sabalenka with 15 wins in a row, a feat matched by Danielle Collins as well.
- Trophy standings
When it comes to titles won, it’s Sinner at the top again. He won the most trophies this year – eight. Alcaraz won the second-most trophies in 2024 – just four – while Tommy Paul and Matteo Berrettini each bagged three.
On the women’s side it was Swiatek, with the Polish player finishing on five trophies this year. Sabalenka is tied in second place with Diana Shnaider who won four trophies this year, while Gauff claimed three trophies this year.
- Rankings
A couple of interesting things happened on the rankings this year. In total 39 players on the ATP Rankings reached a new career high in 2024 including Sinner who became world number one. On the women’s side we had 26 players reach a new career high though no player made it to number one for the first time in their career.
The biggest jump on the ATP Tour this year was made by Jacob Fearnley who improved his ranking in 2024 by 539 spots (from No 638 to No 99).
On the WTA side that honor belongs to Naomi Osaka who was unranked, and ended the year as the world No 59.That’s the sort of jump that can’t even be defined. As for jumps where we have two numbers, Tomljanovic’s leap from No 549 to No 85 is a massive jump of over 400 spots.
- Prize Money
Finally, let’s conclude with a bit of money talk.
The top earners on the ATP Tour were Sinner ($16.9m), Alcaraz ($9.8m) and Zverev ($8.8m) while on the women’s side they were Sabalenka ($9.7m), Gauff ($9.3m) and Swiatek ($8.5m).
A lot of mentions of Sinner here, will the Italian continue his dominance in the 2025 season? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
