Stan the Man will play at the US Open this year after all…
Stan Wawrinka’s illustrious Grand Slam career is not quite finished yet. Following a dramatic twist just days before the tournament, the three-time major champion has been granted a last-minute wildcard into the main draw of the 2026 US Open.
The 41-year-old legend of the game, who won here back in 2016, found himself left off the original list of wildcard recipients, sparking debate and a lot of criticism among fans. However, as American player Patrick Kypson was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to an injury, it was freeing up the main draw spot for the former World No. 3.
“I’m incredibly excited to accept the wildcard for the 2026 US Open and look forward to competing in front of the fans in New York once again,” Wawrinka said in a official statement.
This will clearly not end the criticism as most tennis fans believe he should have been included in the first place. However, we are certainly glad to see Stan back at one of his favourite tournaments.

Received wildcards for all the major tournaments
Wawrinka, who has announced that he plans to retire from professional tennis at the end of the season, has received wildcards for all the major championships this year.
He won 3 major three major titles (16 ATP titles in total) during his career and has a 46-16 record at the US Open.
