Exactly 335 days after a devastating Achilles injury brought his season to a sudden halt, Holger Rune is officially back on the tennis court, and back in the win column.
The former World No. 4 made an emotional and successful return to competitive tennis on Friday, defeating Bulgaria’s Iliyan Radulov 6-3, 6-3 in his Davis Cup debut for Denmark in nearly a year.
This was Rune’s first official match since October 18, 2025, when he suffered a full rupture of his left Achilles tendon during the semifinals of the Stockholm Open against Ugo Humbert. The Dane was then sidelined following surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process.
He had hoped at various points to return earlier in 2026, including during the clay-court season, but those plans were pushed back. He later considered returning at the US Open after training with Alcaraz, but ultimately decided that he was not yet confident he could handle the demands of best-of-five-set tennis.
Now he is back where he wants to be: competing, and it does bring some nerves.
“Of course I’m nervous. There are a lot of butterflies in my stomach now that I’m finally going out there to compete again.”
Those nerves were initially visible as Radulov broke first to move ahead 3-2. Rune gradually settled, however, and began to impose himself from the baseline. He won four straight games to take the opening set 6-3 before breaking early in the second and continuing to pull away.
The Dane ultimately needed just one hour and 25 minutes to complete the 6-3, 6-3 victory, breaking Radulov four times along the way.
It was exactly the kind of return Rune and the Danish fans had been hoping for, not exactly a perfect performance, but a competitive match completed successfully after almost a year away.
The fans also saw an emotional reaction from Rune’s mother, Aneke, who watched from the stands.
“It was really beautiful to see, it was so wonderful and liberating to see his joy. He is simply in his element on a tennis court.”

“I’ve missed the pressure,” Rune said ahead of the tie, while also describing the Davis Cup as an opportunity to discover where his level and body actually stood after such a long absence, and there were plenty of positives to take from the match.
Denmark and Bulgaria are locked at 1-1 heading into Saturday’s decisive day. After the doubles, Holger Rune is set to face Grigor Dimitrov in what should be a great second chapter to Rune’s comeback.
