I spend a lot of time on the court trying different hybrid setups. Some setups are recommended by other community members, coaches or players and some are just my own experiments when searching for the best strings for my game and looking for that perfect sweet spot of spin, control and feel. Over the last few months I’ve been toying with poly/poly hybrids because they give you a level of stability and tension maintenance that full multis or gut hybrids just cannot achieve, while still allowing you to tune the feel by mixing different polys in the mains and crosses.
Most players think hybrids are poly with gut or multifilament, but it’s with poly/poly hybrids where I’ve found some of the most interesting results. They are often overlooked because they sound aggressive on paper, but the right combination will give you incredible control, serious spin potential and a string bed that stays consistent for weeks. So here are the 5 poly/poly hybrid setups I highly recommend to try – and why they work so well.
| Rank | Hybrid Setup | Best for | Main appeal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Soldier / Tour M8 | Players wanting elite tension maintenance with playability | Stable mains with softer, play-friendly crosses. |
| 2 | Hepta-Plus / Energy | Heavy topspin players wanting bite with responsive feel | Grippier mains with lively, thin crosses. |
| 3 | Confidential / Mach-10 | Players wanting control with spin and softer feel | Controlled mains with soft, lively crosses. |
| 4 | Tour M8 / Toroline A5 | Players wanting stability with spin-friendly crosses | Balanced mains with soft, snapback crosses. |
| 5 | Lynx Tour / Hawk | Advanced players wanting control with spin | Stable mains with firm, textured spin crosses. |
1. Grapplesnake Soldier (Mains) / Tour M8 (Crosses)
This hybrid is all about stability. Soldier is a high performance polyester string built for big hitters who want absolute stability throughout the life of the string. It shares the same control family as the Tour Sniper and Tour M8, giving you maximum tension maintenance and a firm, reliable feel. The Tour M8 is softer and more fun. You get that comfort in the crosses without killing the stability Soldier brings to the mains.
I have tried this over the last few months and it is low powered, very stable and excellent for intentional flat hitters who commit to their shots. The mains offer control and stability and the crosses add just enough playability and feel so the stringbed doesn’t feel boardy. This is a hybrid I keep coming back to for clients who want elite tension maintenance but don’t want their racquet to feel dead after three hours.
Specs:
- Mains: Grapplesnake Soldier (7-sided heptagon, high stability)
- Crosses: Grapplesnake Tour M8 (softer, play-friendly poly)
- Feel: Stable, firm, controlled
- Best for: Players wanting elite tension maintenance with playability
2. Silvester Hepta-Plus (Mains) / Energy (Crosses)
Hepta-Plus is a shaped poly for spin and control with a stiffer edge. The heptagonal profile really bites into the ball making topspin and slice easy to generate. It is firmer, grippier and more spin oriented than the Energy 1.23 with less free depth but more bite and shape. Energy on the other hand, is a thinner, more responsive string that gives you a lively feel and can make the string bed feel easier to accelerate.
This hybrid is perfect for players who want maximum spin from the mains but don’t want the crosses to be too stiff. I’ve put this in a few rackets for clients who are starting to generate heavy topspin and want that extra bite without losing feel. The Energy crosses keep the stringbed from feeling dead, and the Hepta-Plus in the mains grabs the ball.
Specs:
- Mains: Silvester Hepta-Plus (1.24mm heptagonal, spin-focused)
- Crosses: Silvester Energy (1.15mm thin, responsive)
- Feel: Grippier, spin-oriented, lively crosses
- Best for: Heavy topspin players wanting bite with responsive feel
3. Solinco Confidential (Mains) / Mach-10 (Crosses)
Solinco Confidential is sort of a cross between Tour Bite and Hyper-G with some twists of its own. It holds tension well even on the lower end. It’s controlled, more comfortable than Tour Bite and has a slightly pentagonal shape for solid topspin. Mach-10 is one of the newer generation softer polys that has a very nice blend of feel and easy pace. You get a string that is lively enough to help your game but controlled enough that it does not feel to wild [your previous article].
This hybrid is a great middle ground for players who want control and spin but don’t want a super harsh string bed. I’ve been testing this extensively over the last few months and what I like is that Confidential in the mains gives you stability and spin, while Mach-10 in the crosses adds playability and a softer feel. This is a good choice for the intermediate to advanced player who wants a modern stringbed without the arm fatigue.
Specs:
- Mains: Solinco Confidential (1.25mm pentagonal, controlled spin)
- Crosses: Solinco Mach-10 (1.20mm soft poly, lively feel)
- Feel: Controlled, comfortable, balanced
- Best for: Players wanting control with spin and softer crosses
4. Grapplesnake Tour M8 (Mains) / Toroline A5 (Crosses)
Tour M8 is softer and more playable than Soldier, so you get that comfort without losing too much control. Toroline A5 is a softer poly with good snapback and a comfortable feel, serving up nicely in crosses for players who want spin without harshness. I’ve been playing around with this hybrid recently and the thing I like about it is the Tour M8 in the mains gives you a balanced controlled response and then the Toroline A5 in the crosses gives you that extra snapback for spin.
A good choice for players transitioning from the full soft poly set-up and want a little more stability without going too firm. This is in a couple of juniors rackets and feedback has been good. They like the control in the mains but still get that lively feel from the crosses.
Specs:
- Mains: Grapplesnake Tour M8 (softer, play-friendly poly)
- Crosses: Toroline A5 (soft poly with snapback)
- Feel: Balanced, controlled, comfortable
- Best for: Players wanting stability with softer, spin-friendly crosses

5. Head Lynx Tour (Mains) / Hawk (Crosses)
Lynx Tour is a control-oriented poly with good tension maintenance and a solid feel that plays well for players who hit through the ball. Hawk is a firm low-power poly made for control and spin with a textured surface that bites the ball. This hybrid is for players who want serious control and don’t mind a firmer stringbed.
I’ve tested this over multiple sessions and it’s got that low-powered, control-first character that’s perfect for aggressive players who supply their own power. For advanced players seeking a stringbed that stays tight and consistent, this is a good option. The Lynx Tour in the mains gives you stability, the Hawk crosses add that extra bite for spin.
Specs:
- Mains: Head Lynx Tour (control-oriented, stable)
- Crosses: Head Hawk (firm, textured, spin-focused)
- Feel: Firm, low-powered, controlled
- Best for: Advanced players wanting control with spin
Other Notables to Consider
If you want to look past these five, there are a few other poly/poly hybrids worth checking out. Solinco Hyper-G / HighString Zeus 2.0 is a great combo for players looking for maximum spin from the square shaped Hyper-G mains with the precision and depth control of the Zeus 2.0 crosses.
Tru Pro Pure Rush R8zor / Silvester Energy For those who want a firm, stable main with a lively, responsive cross. R8zor is a great high performance poly and holds tension well. Energy gives that extra bit of acceleration and feel.
Solinco Mach-10 / Tru Pro Ghostwire A softer, more play-friendly hybrid for players who want feel without losing too much control. Mach-10 in the mains provides you with easy pace, while Ghostwire in the crosses adds stability.
Final verdict
After months of testing these poly/poly hybrids on court for myself and for clients, here’s what I’d recommend:
- Grapplesnake Soldier / Tour M8 for elite tension maintenance with playability.
- Silvester Hepta-Plus / Energy for maximum spin with responsive crosses.
- Solinco Confidential / Mach-10 for control with spin and softer feel.
- Grapplesnake Tour M8 / Toroline A5 for stability with spin-friendly crosses.
- Head Lynx Tour / Hawk for serious control with spin for advanced players.
