The shoes of the top 5 ATP and WTA tennis players are usually tailored to their unique preferences. But what tennis shoes are the top players using at the moment?
ATP Top 5: Tennis Shoes
The ATP rankings highlight the best male players in the world, and their footwear choices reflect a mix of innovation, durability, and personal customization. Hereโs what the top 5 are wearing as of early 2025:
1. Jannik Sinner
Brand & Model: Nike Air Zoom Vapor Pro
Details: Jannik Sinner, the fiery Italian who has ascended to the top spot, endorsing the Nikeโs Air Zoom Vapor Pro, but actually using the discontinued Nike Air Zoom Zero. Known for its lightweight design and responsive cushioning, this shoe offers Sinner the agility he needs for his explosive baseline game. While Nike often customizes shoes for its top athletes, Sinnerโs version likely includes tweaks for added stability to match his relentless movement on hard courts.
2. Alexander Zverev
Brand & Model: Adidas Defiant Speed 2
Details: Zverev, a tall figure with a powerful all-court game, is still sticking to Adidas gear. Zverev is endorsing the new Adidas Ubersonic 5 but is playing with the Adidas Defiant Speed 2, but most likely a customized version for his feet.
3. Carlos Alcaraz
Brand & Model: Nike Air Zoom Vapor 12
Details: The dynamic Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, known for his speed and versatility, endorses the Nike Air Zoom Vapor 12. But his actual shoe is more like a mix of that shoe and his old Vapor Pros. The Air Zoom Vapor 12 is an evolution of the Vapor line. The 2025 iteration offers enhanced durability and support without sacrificing the lightweight feel.
4. Taylor Fritz
Brand & Model: Asics Gel Res X
Details: American star Taylor Fritz has moved from his contract with Nike to Asics. He is currently endorsing the new Asics Gel Res X, but it does look like he still uses the Gel Res 9.
5. Casper Ruud
Brand & Model: Yonex Power Cushion Eclipsion 5
Details: Norwegian clay-court specialist Casper Ruud relies on the Yonex Power Cushion Eclipsion 5 (it is more likely a customized Eclipsion 4) . This model is designed for stability and cushioning, ideal for Ruudโs grinding style and lateral movement on clay. Yonex, a growing presence in tennis footwear, likely customizes Ruudโs shoes to handle the wear and tear of his preferred surface.
WTA Top 5: Tennis Shoes
The WTAโs top 5 players bring a variety of styles to the court, and their footwear reflects both performance needs and sponsorship loyalties. Hereโs what theyโre sporting in 2025:
1. Aryna Sabalenka
Brand & Model: Nike Air Zoom NXT
Details: Powerhouse Aryna Sabalenka, reigning at No. 1, wears the Nike Air Zoom NXT (this shoe seems to have been discontinued). This shoe offers a balance of cushioning and responsiveness, supporting Sabalenkaโs aggressive, hard-hitting game. Her custom versions often feature striking designs and optimised for hard-court battles.
2. Iga Swiatek
Brand & Model: ON Roger Pro 2
Details: Polandโs Iga Swiatek, a clay-court maestro with a well-rounded game, switched from with the Asics Gel-Resolutions to the ON Roger Pro 2. We are seeing more and more players on tour with ON shoes, most recently Alexander Bublik and Ben Shelton.
3. Coco Gauff
Brand & Model: New Balance Coco CG2
Details: American sensation Coco Gauff has her own signature shoe from New Balance. This shoe provides excellent support and cushioning, perfect for Gauffโs speedy, defensive style. New Balance tailors her pairs with vibrant colors, reflecting her youthful energy and rising star status.
4. Elena Rybakina
Brand & Model: Yonex Power Cushion Eclipsion 5
Details: Kazakhstanโs Elena Rybakina, with her towering serve and baseline power, used to wear the Adidas Stycon, but is now a fully sponsored Yonex player, with racquets, apparel, and shoes – all Yonex.
5. Qinwen Zheng
Brand & Model: Nike Air Zoom Vapor Pro 3
Details: Rising Chinese star Qinwen Zheng joins the Nike camp by endorsing the Air Zoom Vapor 3 (however, it does look like she is still using the classic Vapor 9.5 shoes). This lightweight, durable shoe supports her aggressive baseline play and quick footwork.
Nike is still going strong the footwear scene among the top players, but they are far from as dominant as they used to be. Adidas has players like Zverev and Tsitsipas and now also Hurkacz (new signing). ON is rising in the ranks with several new signings and an established brand like Asics are doing well with Fritz, Berrettini and the latest signing, Musetti. Yonex always try to go for a full sponsorship, meaning clothes, shoes and racquets and a few players like Rybakina, Wawrinka and Ruud, are top-to-bottom Yonex.
Most pros customize their shoes to maximize the fit (well, the brands do it for them, of course). Some shoes differ from what they endorse, and some are almost identical. This is similar to what is done with racquets and, in some cases, apparel.
