Bio and Career

Pedro Martínez Portero was born on April 26th, 1997, in Alzira, Spain. He started playing tennis at the age of 6 at the Club de Tenis Alzira.

After having turned pro in 2016, Martínez’s breakthrough came in 2020 at Roland Garros, where he reached the third round, a feat he repeated in 2021. This got him into the top 100 of the ATP rankings.

His biggest career moment arrived at the 2022 Chile Open, where he won his maiden ATP title, defeating Sebastian Baez in the final, becoming the first Spanish champion there since Tommy Robredo in 2007. This achievement pushed him into the world top 50. In 2021, he claimed his first ATP Challenger title in Seville and reached the Kitzbühel final, losing to Casper Ruud. A big upset came at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, where he beat top 10 player Hubert Hurkacz, and in 2023, he defeated Jannik Sinner in Miami, again showing his knack for toppling Top 10 players (3-10 record).

His preferred surface is the clay-court, which shows through his five Challenger titles, all on clay, including Lisbon 2023. Overall, a very talented player that should be able to reach new high rankings, if he can avoid injuries in the near future.

Pedro Martínez reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of no 36 in Feb 2025. His doubles peak was no 51 on February 14, 2022.
