Bio and Career
Jelena Ostapenko was born on June 8th, 1997, in Riga, Latvia and she speaksย Latvian, Russian and English. Jelena began playing tennis already at 5 years but decided to focus on the sport more at around age 12.
Turning pro in 2012, Ostapenko peaked at no 2 in the junior rankings, winning the 2014 Wimbledon girls singles title.
Her breakthrough came in 2017, when, ranked No. 47, she won the French Open, defeating Simona Halep 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to claim her first Grand Slam and WTA title, becoming the first unseeded woman to win Roland Garros since 1933. That year, she also won the Seoul Open, her second career title.
In 2018, she reached the Wimbledon semifinals, her best result there, beating Elina Svitolina among others. Ostapenkoโs biggest career wins include her defeat of no 2 ranked Karolina Pliskova at 2017 Roland Garros and no 1 ranked Iga Swiatek at the 2023 US Open, reaching the quarterfinals. In 2024, she won titles in Linz and Eastbourne, and in 2025, she captured the Dubai Championships, defeating Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 7-5.
Ostapenko has nine WTA singles titles and eleven WTA doubles titles. This includes a singles title at theย 2017 French Openย and a doubles title at theย 2024 US Open, withย Lyudmyla Kichenok.
