Brazilian talent Joao Fonseca surely added to his status as one of the brightest future stars today, when he secured the biggest title of his career at the Swiss Indoors Basel. The 19-year-old gave us a great watch with an aggressive, high-quality tennis to defeat Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, in the ATP 500 final.
Fonseca’s victory is not only his second tour-level title but also his first at the ATP 500 level, making him the third-youngest ATP 500 champion since the series began in 2009. His victory in Basel was also important for Brazilian tennis, as he is the first player from his country to win a title above ATP 250 level since the legendary Gustavo Kuerten in 2001.
Dominant performance in the final
The final saw Fonseca play with great composure and power, dictating play from the baseline throughout the 86-minute contest.
“It is crazy,” said a happy Fonseca during the trophy ceremony, with his family, who made a last-minute flight change from Brazil to attend, watching on. “My parents just came from Brazil… it’s just amazing to have them here for the biggest title of my career. It is a pleasure playing this sport and this tournament and I am very happy.”

Career-high ranking and top-30 debut
The defeat extends a difficult record for Davidovich Fokina, who is now 0-5 in tour-level finals. However, the day belonged entirely to Fonseca, whose rise continues.
Following this latest breakthrough, which adds to his earlier ATP 250 win in Buenos Aires, the 19-year-old will climb to a career-high of World No. 28 in the ATP Rankings next week.
Fonseca (also the reigning Next Gen ATP Finals champion) now heads to the Paris Masters as a genuine contender.
