We’re getting close to the quarterfinals, let’s see who the last players to book their place will be. Monday 1st September features some great matches.
Jannik Sinner vs Alexander Bublik
Jannik Sinner, the world No. 1, has been in imperious form this season of course, and he has dropped only one set so far at the US Open. Following a shaky start against Shapovalov he showed once again why he’s the world no 1 and took command of the match.
While Alexander Bublik has had a surprising tournament, including a five-set victory over Tommy Paul, his record on hard courts this year is not great.
Bublik’s unpredictable game can cause problems, which he has shown against Sinner recently. I think he can get a set here but he won’t stop Sinner this time.
Prediction: Sinner in 4 sets.
Lorenzo Musetti vs Jaume Munar
Musetti is starting to find great form, just at the right time, after a slow season otherwise. The draw has been pretty good for him and he’s got a great chance to go far here in New York now.
Munar actually has a 2-1 advantage in their head-to-head, also including a win on hard courts earlier this year. The 44-ranked Spaniard has impressed so far in the tournament with wins over Bergs and Diallo but now he faces more of a challenge.
In the long format I trust Musetti to find a way in this matchup, as he’s clearly got his confidence back.
Prediction: Musetti in 4 sets.
Andrey Rublev vs Felix Auger-Aliassime
This is an interesting match that I’m really looking forward to watch and won’t be easy to predict. Andrey Rublev holds a commanding 7-1 head-to-head record against the Canadian, including two wins this season. He has had a shaky start to the US Open, but has found his rhythm in recent matches and looks sold and stable mentally.
Auger-Aliassime, ranked No. 27, is coming off a massive upset victory over Alexander Zverev and he has shown once again that his peak level is extremely high but it seems to come only in certain matches.
While the Canadian’s confidence is soaring, Rublev’s consistent power and psychological edge in this matchup will give him the upper hand. It’s hard to look away from their h2h stats. Expect a long, physical battle that could go either way.
Prediction: Rublev in 5 sets.
