The US Open 2025 quarter-finals serve up a blockbuster clash between two Grand Slam champions: world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and the crafty, in-form, Marketa Vondrousova.
This is last year’s champion vs the former Wimbledon champion in Vondrousova, should be a great match!
Road to the Quarter-Finals
Aryna Sabalenka has been a force of nature in her title defense, not dropping a single set. Her powerful serve and groundstrokes have overwhelmed opponents as usual, including straight-set wins over Leylah Fernandez (6-2, 7-6(2)) and Cristina Bucsa (6-1, 6-4). Sabalenka has shown her consistency with 79% first-serve points won and saving 17 of 19 break points.
Marketa Vondrousova, the unseeded 2023 Wimbledon champ (world No. 60), has defied expectations here in New York. She stunned two top-10 seeds, No. 7 Jasmine Paolini (7-6(4), 6-1) and No. 9 Elena Rybakina (6-4, 5-7, 6-2), leaning on her lefty forehand, pinpoint drop shots and strong defense.
Head-to-Head
Sabalenka holds a tight 5-4 edge in their head-to-head, with their latest clash at Cincinnati 2025 going her way (7-5, 6-1). Vondrousova, however, has had her moments, upsetting Sabalenka on grass in Berlin (2025, 6-2, 6-4) and clay in Stuttgart (2024, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5). On hard courts, Sabalenka dominates 4-1, giving her an edge on the Flushing Meadows surface.
Predictions and Odds
This match can really go either way as Vindrousova is in fantastic form, at the right time, and will give Sabalenka a tough time here. A 3.30 (+230) odds on the Czech might be tempting for many bettors out there.
Sabalenka, who is no 1 for a reason, will look to overpower her opponent and she has an edge looking at recent hard-court meetings. Vindrousova’s crafty slices and drop shots might earn some points but much will depend if she manages to keep her serving level as high as we’ve seen lately.
We’re still going with a 3 set win for Sabalenka, she’s been sharp this week, knows what it will take to win today and I have a feeling she rather face Vindrousova than Rybakina.
