The hard-court swing has started and now we’re awaiting the the 136th edition of the Canadian men’s Masters 1000 event at IGA Stadium in Montreal. With Zverev and Auger-Aliassime as top seeds and a good 96-player singles draw, the National Bank Open draw ceremony was held on Friday afternoon. The Draw Analysis
The official singles draw was revealed Friday, July 31, with the top 32 players on the entry list receiving byes into the second round. Six wildcards round out the field, including Canadians Gabriel Diallo and Liam Draxl, alongside Gael Monfils, who has announced this will be one of his final tournaments before retirement at the end of the season.
The draw thins out considerably at the top before it even begins. Jannik Sinner, who arrives having swept all five Masters 1000 titles contested so far this season, is skipping the event, as is Carlos Alcaraz. Novak Djokovic has also withdrawn.
Zverev headlines the top half as the No. 1 seed, with home favourite Felix Auger-Aliassime seeded second and given the second half of the draw as a result. Alex de Minaur (3), Daniil Medvedev (4), defending champion Ben Shelton (5), Flavio Cobolli (6), Taylor Fritz (7) and Jiri Lehecka (8) round out the top eight seeds.
- Zverev opens against the winner of Lorenzo Sonego and Tallon Griekspoor, and sits in the same section as Taylor Fritz, setting up a potential quarter-final rematch of their Wimbledon meeting, which Zverev won in straight sets to snap a seven-match losing streak against the American. Monfils and Tommy Paul also lurk in this section.
- Medvedev’s quarter: The fourth seed opens against big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard or Botic van de Zandschulp, with defending champion Ben Shelton projected as his quarter-final opponent. Shelton, who won the biggest title of his career in Toronto last year, begins his title defense against fellow American Jenson Brooksby or a qualifier.
- Auger-Aliassime’s quarter: The Canadian favourite opens at home against Estoril champion Luca Van Assche or a qualifier, with a potential quarter-final against Roland Garros finalist Flavio Cobolli looming.
- Denis Shapovalov opens against Zachary Svajda in Alex de Minaur’s quarter of the draw – a section that also features NextGen names Rafael Jodar and Martin Landaluce, both of whom learned their opening assignments as well.
Also of note: former World No. 4 Jack Draper makes his return from a layoff since his Eastbourne semi-final run in June, drawing fellow lefty Terence Atmane in the first round.
