The past seven days in tennis have all been about one thing: Wimbledon. Itโs been an excellent event so far. Weโve had the usual suspects, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, excelling, while the rest of the menโs field hasnโt. For the women, there has been plenty of drama too.
Itโs been an event where many seeds are out early, but thatโs part of the charm. If you want to find out what happened in the world of tennis, on and off the courts, keep reading.
Wimbledon week one recap
Wimbledon has delivered one of the most upset-filled weeks of tennis in recent memory. This isnโt an event that is any stranger to upsets and similar moments, but itโs not so common either.
Grass is not a surface where many of the lower-ranked players get to play much, so that lack of experience prevents them, or generally has prevented them, from pulling off too many upsets. Thatโs changed this year, with some big names dropping out early.
Top 10-ranked players like Lorenzo Musetti, Jack Draper, Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune are all out of the event. Some other big names like Taylor Fritz havenโt been beaten yet, but overall itโs been a really nice mix of expected and unexpected, with the top crowd magnets all securing spots in the second week.
Wimbledon briefly suspends strict dress code in wake of tragedy
Unfortunately, one of the biggest stories in the sporting world this week was a tragic one and impacted Wimbledon as much as the football world. Twenty-eight-year-old Portuguese star footballer Diogo Jota, who played for Liverpool, passed away during the first week of Wimbledon in a tragic car accident in Spain.
With the Wimbledon draw featuring many players from Portugal, the event suspended its strict all-white dress code to allow players to wear black on their uniforms in remembrance of their compatriot.
Itโs a longstanding practice for Wimbledon to not allow players to wear anything but all white, so changing it was a significant gesture worth notingโthough the circumstances that prompted it were certainly very grim.
Mpetshi Perricard hits fastest Wimbledon serve ever
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard should be known to most tennis fans by now, as the French player has slowly but surely worked himself into the top circles of the tennis world. Whatโs particularly striking about the 21-year-old is his stature. Heโs over two meters tall and has all the strengths a player of his size tends to possess.
He has a massive serve, which is his main weapon, but he also boasts a pretty strong forehand on top of that. In his match against Fritz at Wimbledon, the Frenchman unleashed the fastest serve Wimbledon has ever seen at 153 miles per hour, which is 246 km/h. Thatโs well above regular serving speed, but the most amazing part of the whole sequence is that Fritz not only returned the ball but actually won the point.
Tsitsipas shocks with retirement hint and Badosa break up
Itโs been a busy week for Stefanos Tsitsipas at Wimbledon (image on top), but certainly not in the way he had hoped. The Greek player was beaten early at the event after struggling physically. Heโs been dealing with a back injury that is seemingly unwilling to go away.
The rather dejected Tsitsipas admitted that heโs tried everything, and unless things get better, he might even consider hanging it up because he canโt play with it – at least not on the level he wants to be.
On top of that, reports of him and Badosa parting ways also hit the news, which made a lot of tennis fans sad, as theyโre generally a rather beloved tennis couple.
Coach Goran Ivanisevic also delivered a scathing review of Tsitsipas, saying the following in an interview last week:
โHe wants, but he doesnโt do anything. All the โI want, I wantโ, but I donโt see that progress. I was shocked, I have never seen a more unprepared player in my life. With this knee, I am three times more fit than him. This is really bad.โ
Press conference antics at Wimbledon
Cameron Norrie experienced a bizarre interaction during one of his press conferences at Wimbledon. The British player was asked whether he was dating Emma Raducanu, which caught him off guard as he initially didnโt even understand what he was being asked.
When asked again, Norrie said he wasnโt and that the question would be better suited for Raducanu herself. Many found the exchange utterly bizarre, with tennis fans voicing their disbelief at the weirdness of the question.
