Born on June 28, 1999, in Sokolov, Czech Republic, Markรฉta Vondrouลกovรก started playing tennis at age 4 with her father, and at 10 she started practicing in Prague.
Turning pro in 2015, she reached a junior peak of No. 1, winning two Grand Slam doubles titles (2015 Australian Open and French Open) with Miriam Kolodziejovรก.
Her breakthrough came at 17, winning her first WTA title at the 2017 Biel/Bienne Open (her second career WTA singles event) as a qualifier and entering the Top 100.
In 2019, she reached the Roland Garros final as an unseeded teenager, losing to Ash Barty without dropping a set en route, becoming the first teen in a Grand Slam final since 2009. She also won a silver medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, falling to Belinda Bencic.
Her biggest achievement was the 2023 Wimbledon title, defeating Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-4 as the first unseeded womenโs champion in the Open Era, reaching No. 6. After a shoulder injury ended her 2024 season post-Wimbledon first-round loss, she roared back in 2025, winning the Berlin Open, her third WTA title (beating among others world no 1 Aryna Sabalenka,).
