Bio and Career

Pablo Carreño Busta was born on July 12th, 1991, in Gijón, Spain, and he started playing tennis when he was 6 years old. At the age of 15 he started focus even more on tennis and began training at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona.

We saw his talent already in the junior years and he reached a high no 6 in the combined junior world rankings in February 2009, the same year he eventually turned pro.

Carreño Busta’s breakthrough came in 2016, winning his first ATP title in Winston-Salem and reaching the US Open doubles final with Guillermo García-López. In 2017, he reached his first ATP 500 final in Rio de Janeiro and got into the US Open semifinals, marking his best Grand Slam result. This year he also debuted at the Nitto ATP Finals.

He claimed the Chengdu Open in 2019 and contributed to Spain’s 2019 Davis Cup victory. In 2020, he reached the US Open semifinals and Roland Garros quarterfinals, notably defeating Novak Djokovic via default at Roland Garros. His 2020 Tokyo Olympics bronze medal, earned by beating Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev, marked a big moment for the Spaniard. In 2021, he won titles in Marbella and Hamburg, and in 2022, he secured his biggest title at the Montreal Masters 1000, defeating Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, becoming the 15th Spaniard to win a Masters 1000.

Carreño Busta has seven ATP singles titles (four on clay, three on hard) and four ATP doubles titles, including the 2020 Cincinnati Masters with Alex de Minaur. His 13 Challenger singles titles, with Valencia 2024 as his latest, show further his depth. Elbow injuries requiring surgery in 2023 sidelined him for close to a year, dropping his ranking outside of the top 200, but he rebounded in 2025, reaching the Madrid Open third round as a wildcard ranked no 96.

Carreño Busta reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 10 on September 11, 2017.
