14th July 2025

Last week was a glorious seven days of tennis action, as Wimbledon reached its conclusion in London. With new champions in both the men’s and women’s events, there is plenty to break down. Read on as we dive into all of the key moments from the past week in tennis, including some off-court drama you may have missed.

Swiatek fires up the bakery

Few would have predicted that Iga Swiatek would win Wimbledon this year. Even fewer would have picked the way in which she prevailed.

The Pole was absolutely brutal on the grass – her least favorite surface, remember – powering past Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 in the women’s final. In fact, she won her last 20 games of the tournament, having also thrashed Belinda Bencic 6-2, 6-0 in the semi-finals.

The title is Swiatek’s first since Roland-Garros 2024, taking her Grand Slam tally to six already at the age of 24. It is also her maiden trophy on the grass, on which she was just 21-9 lifetime heading into Wimbledon.

She jumps back up the rankings to world No 3 now, having fallen as low as No 8 in the world before the tournament.

Sinner breaks all the streaks

In the men’s event, Jannik Sinner played lights-out tennis to break a raft of streaks held by Carlos Alcaraz. Coming into the final, the Spaniard was on a 24-match winning streak, including 18 in a row on grass, 20 at Wimbledon, and five straight wins over Sinner.

It looked as though Alcaraz’s runs would continue when he took the first set, but Sinner blasted his way back into the match, winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. The Italian hit an even 40 winners to 40 unforced errors, but it was the second serve dynamic that won him the match.

Sinner won 60% of his own second serves, while claiming 49% of Alcaraz’s. This, combined with Alcaraz’s low first serve percent (53%) meant Sinner was able to gain the upper hand in a good portion of Alcaraz’s service games.

After the match, Alcaraz even confessed that things got to a point where he didn’t know what to do, saying:

“He was returning really well there the second serve that I was hitting. Thanks to that, he was in the position to attack in the second ball every time. So it was really difficult when you are feeling that you just defending all the time and running from side to side all the time.

“At some points I didn’t know what I had to do in the match because from the baseline I was feeling he was better than me, and I couldn’t do anything about it.”

Sabalenka redeems herself

Last month, Aryna Sabalenka was all the talk, and not for the right reasons. The Belarusian essentially said in her post-French Open final press conference that Coco Gauff only won because she hit errors, a comment which drew her plenty of criticism.

After losing to Anisimova in the Wimbledon semi-finals, Sabalenka made sure to not repeat her mistake. On several occasions during her presser, Sabalenka joked and said that she had learnt her lesson and would be disappointing anyone who had come to hear her talk bad about Anisimova.

Tommy Paul gets engaged

Tommy Paul’s Wimbledon might not have gone the way he wanted, but the American still had a happy ending this July. Just hours ago, he announced that he and his girlfriend Paige Lorenze are engaged.

Lorenze is an influencer, and the pair have been dating since October 2022 (publically).

Coming up this week

This week is one of those strange post-Grand Slam weeks in tennis. There is technically action, but the majority of big names will be taking the week off.

It’s also an odd window where a little bit of European clay returns (just to help Casper Ruud buff up his ranking, surely). Three events take place on the men’s side, with ATP 250s in Los Cabos, Gstaad and Båstad, Sweden (Tennisnerd will be there!), while the women head to Hamburg and Iasi.

Later this month, the road to the US Open will start in earnest, with the Canada Masters kicking off in two weeks time.
