Madrid Masters 1000 Draw and Preview

Written by: Jonas Eriksson | May 1, 2016

Madrid Masters 1000 starts today with a lot of questions to answer:

Can Nadal continue his clay-court momentum and possibly take the lead in number of Masters title with 29 over Djokovic’s 28?

Will Djokovic be back in shape after his surprising early exit in Monte Carlo?

How rusty is Federer after only having played one tournament since his knee injury?

Can Thiem, Coric or Kyrgios make waves through the draw and do some #NextGen damage?

The draw is not easy for the top players. Djokovic will meet Coric or Almagro in his first round, Federer potentially has Thiem in his second round and Nadal could face Goffin in the third if he can get by Troicki. If the draw does play out we could have some salivating matches ahead of us:

Nadal vs Federer quarter-final, Wawrinka vs Djokovic semi-final, and of course the potential blockbuster Nadal vs Djokovic final.

My pick for the tournament is Nadal. Now that he’s confidence is back and he’s more relaxed on court, I think playing in Spain with the recent Monte Carlo title in his pocket will make him too tough, even for Djokovic.

But for now, all is speculation. What are your thoughts around Madrid Masters? Who do you like to see on the podium in the end?
