In a passing of the torch that felt both inevitable and historic, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic on Sunday to claim his first Australian Open title. With this victory, the 22-year-old Spaniard becomes the youngest man in history to complete a Career Grand Slam.

The match, held at a packed Rod Laver Arena, saw Alcaraz recover from a shaky start to overcome the 10-time Melbourne champion in four sets: 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5.

The Final

Djokovic, appearing in his 11th Australian Open final, dominated the opening set with clinical precision, capitalising on Alcaraz’s early nerves. However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the second set as Alcaraz found his rhythm, using his classic explosive forehand and exceptional movement to wear down the 38-year-old Serb.

  • Set 1: Djokovic takes control early (6-2).
  • Set 2: Alcaraz bounces back with aggressive baseline play (6-2).
  • Set 3: The Spaniard breaks early and maintains the lead (6-3).
  • Set 4: A tough battle ends with Alcaraz breaking Djokovic in the final game (7-5).

A New Record for the History Books

Alcaraz has now won all four major tournaments (Wimbledon, US Open, French Open and Australian Open). At 22 years and 272 days, he surpasses his idol, Rafael Nadal, who completed the feat at age 24.

“It’s a dream come true,” Alcaraz said during the trophy ceremony. “To do it here in Melbourne, against a legend like Novak, makes it even more special.”

He went on to honor his legendary opponent:

“What you are doing is really inspiring. Not only for the tennis players but all athletes the world over, and me as well.”

Djokovic congratulated his opponent afterwards: “First and foremost, congratulations to Carlos. It was an amazing tournament and couple of weeks for you and your team. What you are doing is historic, legendary. I wish you the best of luck for the rest of your career.”

While the defeat denies Djokovic a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title, he hinted that his journey isn’t over yet, despite the “great ride” so far.
