Bio and Career
Born September 6, 2002, in Montreal, Canada, Leylah Fernandez is a Canadian professional tennis player known for her tenacious left-handed game and great counterpunching.
Turning pro in 2019, Fernandez reached a junior peak of No. 1 after winning the 2019 French Open girls singles title over Emma Navarro.
Her breakthrough came at the 2021 US Open, where, ranked No. 73, she reached the final as an unseeded player, defeating Aryna Sabalenka, Elina Svitolina and Angelique Kerber before losing to Emma Raducanu, becoming the youngest Canadian Grand Slam finalist.
In the same year she also won her first WTA title at the Monterrey Open, beating Viktorija Golubic.
In 2022, she defended her Monterrey title, and in 2023, she claimed the Hong Kong Open, defeating Katerina Siniakova. Her biggest moment in 2025, ranked No. 29, was reaching the Wimbledon fourth round, her best Wimbledon result.
2025 saw her win the 2025 Mubadala Citi DC Open, her fourth WTA title and her first WTA 500 title.
Currently, coached by Jorge Fernandez, she has four WTA singles titles in total and has earned $6.7M in prize money.
