Day 3 of the AO 2026 on Tuesday and the matches just get better and better… We’ve seen some good upsets already (Arthur Gea for example). Can Spizzirri deliver the next one?
Joao Fonseca vs. Eliot Spizzirri
This is a “Next Gen” battle between two of the tour’s most promising rising stars. Both players have made great leaps in the rankings over the last year, but they arrive in Melbourne with different momentum.
- Joao Fonseca: The 19-year-old Brazilian is seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time. He had a superb 2025 season, highlighted by a title in Basel and a breakthrough into the Top 30. He plays an aggressive, heavy-hitting game but has recently been managing a minor back injury.
- Eliot Spizzirri: The former top-ranked college player from the University of Texas is making his mark on the pro tour. He entered the year in great form, reaching the quarterfinals in Auckland as a qualifier.
- Head-to-Head: Spizzirri leads 1–0. They met in the 2024 US Open qualifying rounds, where Spizzirri won a tight three-setter.
Predictions and Odds: Fonseca is the favorite on paper and always hyped to achieve great things, currently at 1.50 (-200) to win the match. However, Spizzirri’s recent form and previous win over the Brazilian make this a dangerous opener, not at least taking into consideration Fonseca’s back issues. This might be a tight clash and I like the game hcp odds on Spizzirri at +3.5 for 1.87 (-116).
Grigor Dimitrov vs. Tomas Machac
This matchup features veteran Grigor Dimitrov against one of the most in-form players on the tour right now, Tomas Machac.
- Grigor Dimitrov: Now 34, Dimitrov’s ranking has slipped slightly from his Top 10 heights of 2024, but he remains one of the most talented shot-makers on tour. He likes it on the quick courts of Melbourne, where he is a former semifinalist.
- Tomas Machac: Machac is arguably the “hottest” player in the draw. He is fresh off winning the Adelaide International title last week, where he defeated Tommy Paul and Ugo Humbert. His flat, powerful groundstrokes and incredible movement make him a nightmare for seeds.
- Head-to-Head: Machac leads 1–0. He defeated Dimitrov in Vienna in late 2024.

Prediction and odds: This really is a “clash of styles.” Dimitrov will try to use his slice and variety to disrupt his opponents rhythm, but Machac’s confidence is at an all-time high and I see him as the favorite here (also at bookmakers, at odds around 1.73 or -137.5). Both players had their share of injury issues lately but Machac is clearly back in great form while the Bulgarian seem slower in recovering from his rehab.
I bet on the Czech to continue his momentum and carry on to the 2nd round.
