The 2026 Italian Open reaches its grand finale today, Sunday, May 17th. The historic red clay of Campo Centrale will host an interesting clash between the undisputed world No. 1 and one of the finest clay-court specialists of this generation.

This will be the fifth meeting between Jannik Sinner and Casper Ruud, where the Italian holds a 4-0 lead and will enter the final as a huge favorite to win the Rome Masters for the first time.

Jannik Sinner (1) vs. Casper Ruud (23)

Venue: Campo Centrale, Foro Italico

Scheduled Time: Approx. 17:00 CEST

After weather delays pushed his semi-final into a tense, two-day affair, Sinner ultimately beat his rival Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Now riding a historic 33-match winning streak (!) at the Masters 1000 level, he stands just one win away from completing the elusive “Career Golden Masters” – winning all nine active Masters 1000 tournaments. He would also become the first Italian man to win Rome in the Open Era.

Casper Ruud comes into the final playing his absolute best tennis of the season. While a dip in the rankings earlier this year left him as the No. 23 seed, his level on clay-courts is unquestioned. Ruud completely dismantled home favorite Luciano Darderi 6-1, 6-1 in an impressive semifinal. Having lost his previous three semi-finals in Rome, the Norwegian has finally broken the curse and is hunting for his second Masters 1000 title on his favorite surface.

Sinner looking for his first ever Rome title

Ruud holds a distinct physical advantage today. He cruised through a quick, one-sided semifinal on Friday. Sinner, conversely, had to return to the court on Saturday morning to finish a grueling three-set decider against Medvedev after Friday night’s rain suspension. Mental and physical fatigue could finally be a factor for the world No. 1.

Ruud’s strategy will be to use his heavy, looping forehand to push Sinner deep behind the baseline, exploiting the slower Rome clay. Sinner will counter by taking the ball remarkably early, suffocating Ruud’s time and trying to dictate with his devastating backhand.

Head-to-Head

Sinner leads their official matchup history 4-0, including a comfortable straight-sets win here in Rome last year. In their last two meetings, Ruud has only managed to win 4 games in total…

Predictions for Sinner vs Ruud

Casper Ruud is in great form and plays on his favorite surface, he’s also the fresher player going into the final. Still, even though I would want him to truly challenge Sinner for the title today, I think the Italian will win it in two sets. Any physical issues for the Italian would change this of course, as we’ve seen happen before, and he has played a lot of matches lately.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella will be in the stands today alongside over 10k fans inside Campo Centrale. The atmosphere will be fiercely partisan in favor of Sinner which should give him the energy needed to find his highest level once again.

  1. Stefan, I believe it was four games not sets that Ruud has won from Sinner in their last two matches.
