Dominic Thiem receives the first wild card for the Mallorca Championships. Thiem will play the Spanish grass-court tournament 19-26th June.

Mallorca, June 4th 2021. – With just two weeks to go until the start of the first edition of the Mallorca Championships, the tournament organisation has confirmed its first big surprise: the first wild card of the tournament goes to Dominic Thiem, current world No. 4 and defending US Open champion.

The 27-year-old Thiem‘s track record is impressive. The Austrian has a total of 17 titles, including his first Grand Slam title in New York last September. It was the fourth time that Thiem reached this final round in a Major, after Roland Garros ’18 and ’19 and Australian Open ’20. He has also reached the last two years final of the Nitto ATP Finals, a tournament that features at the end of the season the top eight players of the year.

In addition to being the current US Open champion, the Austrian also has one Masters 1000 title (Indian Wells ’19), five trophies ATP 500 (Vienna ’19, Beijing ’19, Barcelona ’19, Rio de Janeiro ’17 and Acapulco ’16) and ten more in the ATP 250 category. Thiem entered the Top10 on 6 June 2016, five years ago now, and in all this time he has never left these positions where only the very best have a place.

Nine TOP20 in the Main Draw

Thiem joins a top-class roster that already included eight other players who have been in the Top20 at some point in their careers. Among them are Karen Khachanov (former No. 8), Pablo Carreño (current No. 12 and former Top10), Feliciano López (former No. 12), Nick Kyrgios (former No. 13) and Casper Ruud (current No. 16). In addition, Gilles Simon, Sam Querrey and Guido Pella have also been in the top positions of the ATP ranking throughout their careers.
