Arthur Fils has won his first ATP Masters 1000 title, defeating Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 in the Cincinnati Open final on Sunday. The 22-year-old collected $1,151,380 in prize money with this title win and he is now the first French Masters 1000 champion since 2014.
Fils dominated the opening and closing sets, attacking Tiafoe’s second serve and establishing early breaks in both. He won 12 of the first 13 points played and appeared completely in control until Tiafoe surged in the second set, evening the match at one set each.
The American’s momentum proved short-lived. Fils broke immediately in the decider and never looked back, winning the third set to love – a stunning response in a kind of roller-coaster final. It was actually a very fast 3-set match, played in one hour and 28 minutes
Fils converted four of eight break points and converted his third match point when Tiafoe’s forehand sailed long.
Breakthrough Timing
The title caps Fils’ recovery from a lower-back fracture that forced him to miss the Australian Open and Roland Garros. After returning in February and adding Goran Ivanisevic to his coaching team, Fils has steadily climbed – reaching Masters 1000 semifinals in Miami and Madrid before finally breaking through in Cincinnati.
“A lot of training, a lot of sacrifice, a lot of injuries…. To be able to win a title like this, it means a lot to me…” Fils commented after the match.
The victory also comes exactly one week before the US Open, positioning Fils as a legitimate contender for the year’s final Grand Slam. Especially with no Sinner and an Alcaraz that has just returned to the tour.

Tiafoe reached his second Cincinnati final in three years, having also lost to Jannik Sinner in 2024. The American has enjoyed an unexpected resurgence this week – he entered ranked No. 23 and will climb to No. 12 after his run to the final. He’s collected 37 match wins in 2026, third-most on tour behind Alexander Zverev and Sinner. With this loss, he falls to 4-9 all time in ATP finals.
US Open next
Both players now shift focus to the US Open, which begins August 30 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. For Fils, the momentum from his first Masters 1000 title and rising ranking could signal a serious run at the year’s final Grand Slam. Right now he is 7th favorite at odds around 17.00 to win the US Open.
