Skatov reached world No. 1 in the ITF junior combined rankings on 1 January 2018. He made his ATP debut at the 2020 Astana Open as a wildcard and his first ATP main-draw match win came in 2021 at the same event, defeating Andreas Seppi. He reached his first Challenger final in Almaty in 2021 and in 2022 Timofey got his first Challenger title at Parma, pushing his ranking up around 150. The second Challenger title came later in 2024 at the Schwaben Open.
Skatov’s Grand Slam main-draw appearances include the French Open and US Open in 2023.
In August 2025, he captured the Internazionali di Tennis Città di Todi Challenger title in Italy.

Born to Russian parents and raised first in Russia, he switched allegiance back to Kazakhstan in 2018. Tomfey started playing tennis at age 4 in Tula, Russia and later trained, from age 17, at the Lozano-Altur Tennis Academy in Valencia, Spain.
Skatov favors clay but is comfortable on hard courts and indoors. Off-court, he speaks multiple languages, supports FC Barcelona and reads a lot. His favorite tournament is Wimbledon, and he admires Roger Federer.
