In a development that’s sure to excite many tennis nerds out there, Roger Federer, retired since 2022, has confirmed his return to the court, (of course in an exhibition capacity) during the 2025 Shanghai Masters. According to reports, the iconic Swiss legend will participate in the “Roger Federer & Friends” celebrity doubles match on October 10th, sharing the court with cinematic heavyweights Donnie Yen and Wu Lei, along with former Chinese professional player Zheng Jie.
Federer’s decision to grace the Qizhong Stadium stage is far more than promotional, the venue holds deep resonance for him. The maestro clinched the Shanghai Masters title twice, in 2014 (edging out Gilles Simon in both sets) and again in 2017, defeating Rafael Nadal in straight sets. His on-court accomplishments there, has made him a fan favorite. The tournaments main sponsor, Rolex, is also one of Federer’s most valuable sponsors which he has endorsed since 2001, and that partnership most likely has something to do with the decision to make the comeback in Shanghai.
A 2023 ceremony further sealed his bond with the city: Federer returned as a celebrated guest to receive the “Icon Athlete Award”, joined on court by Li Na and then Chinese no 1 Zhang Zhizhen.

“I am really happy to be returning to Qizhong Stadium in Shanghai for the Rolex Shanghai Masters. Shanghai has always been a special place for me with great fans, unforgettable memories, and a real love for the game.” commented Federer.
This is no competitive comeback of course, but more of an emotional legacy of one of tennis greatest ambassadors. Exhibitions like this remind us that Federer’s allure has always come from how he played as much as how he is perceived, elegant, gracious and always in control.
Federer hung up his racket following the Laver Cup event in 2022 as one of tennis most successful players, having claimed 20 Grand Slam titles during his unbelievable career.
Mark your calendars for October 10 to hopefully see some of the Federer magic once again!
