The 2025 season is upon us and as usual we head to the ATP250 Brisbane for the first action of the year. There are some interesting players to follow here and not at least the return of Nick Kyrgios on tour. He hasn’t been competing since the summer of 2023 and it will many eyes on The Australian “bad boy” in the events leading up to the Australian Open.
He is surely up for a challenge in the first round in Brisbane when he’s facing the powerful serves of Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The Frenchman made a huge mark in 2024 with some impressive performances and it’ll be interesting to see how he can follow it up in the 2025 ATP season.

Form of Kyrgios?
Nick Kyrgios really struggled with injuries back in the 2023 season and had to miss most of the last two seasons with both knee and wrist issues. Before that he really found form, both in singles and doubles. His form now is mostly unknown but as he said: “this is probably the best Iโve felt in two years“.
Kyrgios wants to perform well in Brisbane, his first professional event of his comeback, but of course, the big goal is the Australian Open. Tomorrow, Monday, we’ll see him in action for the first time when he plays doubles with Djokovic.
Mpetshi Perricard is coming from a great 2024 season where he claimed two titles, at Lyon and Basel, and climbed more than 170 ranking spots. At Basel he defeated Ben Shelton in the final to win his first ATP 500 event. The tall and powerful Frenchman also impressed by reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon.
Kyrgios is well informed of the talent of Perricard and commented: “I think especially against Perricard; I could play like Federer and still lose. I could play the best match of my life and still lose. Thatโs the type of player he is. He takes the racquet out of your hand.”
Predictions and Odds
This will be the first meeting between these two players. Looking at the current odds, Mpetshi Perricard is the favorite at 1.73 (-137.5) and the tennis odds for Kyrgios stands at just over 2 times the money.
While this is a really interesting match-up, it’s not a clash easy to predict. Not only because it’s the very start of the season, but also because we have a talented, but at times inconsistent, Mpetshi Perricard against a former great player just returning to the tour.
The young Frenchman will again rely heavily on his serve (he’s averaging almost 210km/h on hisย second (!)ย serves) and powerful groundstrokes, but he’s shown he can master most parts of the game already. The first singles game for Kyrgios could have been an easier one and it might take a while for the Aussie to reach a higher level again.
Our bet and prediction: Mpetshi Perricard to win in straight sets. A 2-0 set betting wager gives a decent 2.88 (+187.5).
