Intermediate players are in an interesting spot regarding strings. At this level many players are beginning to generate their own pace and spin so generally need something with a little more performance than a basic synthetic gut or multifilament, but without going straight to something overly harsh or demanding. So here I’ve concentrated on softer, and mostly thinner, polyester strings – the kind that are easier on the arm, easier to get power from, and still give you enough control to swing confidently.
There are a few small exceptions. Grapplesnake Alpha 1.25mm is in there because it’s a soft polyester that’s become really popular with junior players too. Toroline Truffle X is a bit of an outlier because it’s not strictly a poly at all – it’s a newer experimental material that feels really soft in play and gives you a lot of power. For this one I also avoided synthetic guts or multifilaments, as most intermediate players are starting to generate their own power and usually looking for a little more performance. In my opinion thinner polys are often the best.
| Rank | String | Best for | Main appeal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Yonex Poly Tour Pro 1.20mm | Intermediate players wanting a soft, controlled poly | Easy to use, predictable, and very well balanced. |
| 2 | Grapplesnake Alpha 1.25mm | Players and juniors wanting softness and easy access to performance | Comfortable, lively, and very popular for good reason. |
| 3 | Mach-10 1.20mm | Players wanting a modern soft-poly feel | A great blend of playability, feel, and easy pace. |
| 4 | Toroline Truffle X 1.30mm | Players wanting a softer experimental option with lots of power | Not a strict poly, but very comfortable and powerful. |
| 5 | Silvester Energy 1.15mm | Players wanting a thinner, more responsive string | Fast, lively, and a good option for easier power. |
1. Yonex Poly Tour Pro 1.20mm
For the most intermediate players I would recommend the Yonex Poly Tour Pro 1.20mm. It has that really useful middle ground feel — soft enough to be comfortable, but still controlled enough that you can swing confidently without the stringbed launching the ball everywhere. The thinner 1.20mm gauge makes it feel more playable and responsive than thicker versions and that’s why it works so well for players who are starting to put more of their own pace on the ball. They also do a 1.15mm gauge which is worth considering too if you want an even softer setup.

Specs:
- Type: Soft polyester
- Gauge: 1.20mm
- Feel: Controlled, comfortable, balanced
- Best for: Intermediate players wanting a dependable all-round poly
2. Grapplesnake Alpha 1.25mm
The Grapplesnake Alpha 1.25mm is a great fit for the intermediate player who wants something soft, modern and easy to live with. I put it in because it’s been particularly popular with junior players and that usually tells you something about the accessibility and playability. What I like is it gives you the feel of a soft poly without being too dull or lifeless so it still gives you a decent amount of performance.
Specs:
- Type: Soft polyester
- Gauge: 1.25mm
- Feel: Comfortable, lively, playable
- Best for: Intermediate and junior players wanting easy performance
- Balance: around 320 mm
3. Solinco Mach-10 1.20
Mach-10 1.20 is one of the more interesting of the newer generation soft polys, as it has a very nice blend of feel and easy pace. This is important for the intermediate player since it gives you a string that is lively enough to help your game but controlled enough that it does not feel too wild. The thinner 1.20 gauge gives it a crisp, playable response, and is a very solid choice for players seeking a more modern string bed feel.
Specs:
- Type: Soft polyester
- Gauge: 1.20mm
- Feel: Lively, responsive, modern
- Best for: Intermediate players wanting a softer performance poly
4. Toroline Truffle X 1.30mm
Toroline Truffle X is a bit of an outlier here as it is not strictly a polyester string but I think it deserves a place in this kind of article. It’s soft to play with and has a lot of power, making it a good option for intermediate players looking for something more comfortable and lively than a firmer poly. The experimental material lends a slightly different character to it and that’s part of the appeal – it’s not just another standard string option.
Specs:
- Type: Experimental soft-performance string
- Gauge: Varies by setup
- Feel: Soft, powerful, comfortable
- Best for: Intermediate players wanting power and comfort together
5. Silvester Energy 1.15mm
If you’re an intermediate player looking for a thinner, faster, more responsive feel, I’d recommend the Silvester Energy 1.15mm. The 1.15mm gauge gives it a lively response and can make the stringbed feel a little easier to accelerate, which is useful if you are trying to get more depth and spin without jumping into a harsh setup. I like these thinner polys as they often give the intermediate player that little bit of extra performance they are starting to look for.
Specs:
- Type: Thin polyester
- Gauge: 1.15mm
- Feel: Fast, lively, responsive
- Best for: Players wanting a thinner, more performance-oriented string

Other Notables to Consider
If you want to look beyond these five there are a few other strings that are definitely worth checking out. An obvious one is Yonex Poly Tour Air 1.25mm, as it is one of the softest and most arm-friendly polys out there, so it makes a lot of sense for intermediate players who want a gentler feel without moving fully away from polyester. If you want a softer poly with a little more character and bite but still keeping the setup playable and not overly harsh then Toroline Toro Toro 1.23mm is also a strong option.
The Yonex Poly Tour Drive Soft 1.25mm also fits well in this category as it sits in that useful middle ground of comfort and controlled performance. It should be a pretty good choice for intermediate players looking for a string that delivers a modern feel but not overly demanding. The Silvester Evolution 1.25mm is also worth mentioning because it is super soft and that alone makes it a very interesting option for players who want the feel of a poly but without the usual firm response. These aren’t my top five but they’re definitely worth having in the conversation.
Final verdict
If I were ranking these purely on what I’d most likely recommend to intermediate players, I’d probably say:
- Yonex Poly Tour Pro 1.20mm for the best all-round balance.
- Grapplesnake Alpha 1.25mm for softness and easy playability.
- Mach-10 1.20 for a modern soft-poly feel.
- Toroline Truffle X 1.30mm for power and comfort in a more experimental package.
- Silvester Energy 1.15mm for a thinner, livelier response.
Generally intermediate players want strings that help them get to performance without being too harsh or too dead. The sweet spot is often soft, thinner polys – enough control to swing out with, enough comfort to keep things playable, and enough power to make the racket feel helpful and not restrictive.
