The second round of the new ATP Athens event (Hellenic Championship 2025) brings an interesting clash between experienced Stan Wawrinka and current top 10 player Lorenzo Musetti on the indoor hard courts at the OAKA Arena.
Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, received a wildcard entry into the tournament and advanced after a tough opening-round comeback. The Swiss veteran continues to show flashes of his trademark power and one-handed backhand, but the consistency is not really there like it used to be.
Musetti enters as the second seed and one of the tournament’s main contenders. Ranked inside the world’s top ten, the Italian is pushing for a place at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, adding extra motivation to his Athens campaign. A title win in Greece will get him qualified, anything else and he’s a first alternate.
The two players have met only once before, back in 2020 on clay in Rome, where Musetti claimed victory in straight sets.
Predictions for Musetti vs Wawrinka
On paper, Musetti is the favorite. His movement and variation should serve him well against Wawrinka’s flatter, heavier hitting style. The indoor surface may slightly favor the Swiss, but Musetti’s ability to mix up pace and angles could keep him off balance.
Expect Wawrinka to come out swinging, using his early-strike aggression to stay competitive. Musetti, meanwhile, will aim to control rallies and test Wawrinka’s patience.
Prediction: Musetti in two sets, but won’t be a walk in the park. He’s currently a better player and should be full of motivation as he still has a chance to enter the ATP Finals with a title in Greece.
