The ATP Finals and WTA Finals are the season-ending championships for men’s and women’s pro tennis. Often dubbed the “fifth major,” these invite-only events bring together the top eight singles players and doubles teams of the year to compete for huge prize money and ranking points.
The race is now on for the 2025 ATP and WTA Finals being played in November in Turin and Riyadh.
Last year, in 2024, Jannik Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz in the final to win the singles title while Coco Gauff won against Zheng Qinwen to claim the WTA Finals title.
How Players Qualify
Qualification is based on the season-long Race standings – the PIF ATP Race to Turin and PIF WTA Race to the Finals.
- Top Seven: The top seven players or teams automatically qualify.
- Eighth Spot Rule: A current-year Grand Slam champion ranked between 8th and 20th earns the final spot.
- If no Grand Slam winner fits the criteria, the 8th-ranked player or team qualifies instead.
- On the WTA side, players must also have competed in a minimum number of high-level tournaments (such as WTA 1000 or 500 events) to be eligible.
Unique Tournament Format
The Finals use a distinctive round-robin format instead of single elimination.
- Round Robin: The eight players/teams are split into two groups of four. Each plays three matches within the group.
- Semifinals and Final: The top two from each group advance to the semis, with winners moving on to the Final.
- Match Format: ATP singles are best-of-three sets; ATP doubles use no-ad scoring and a 10-point match tie-break. WTA matches are best-of-three standard sets.
ATP Finals, Why It Matters
Winning the Finals is one of the sport’s greatest honors and it’s not only because of the big prize money winnings that players rank these events high.
- Prestige: It crowns the most consistent players of the year.
- Points: An undefeated champion can earn up to 1,500 ranking points (just shy of a Grand Slam’s 2,000).
- Prize Money: Champions can take home millions.
- Year-End No. 1: The Finals often decide who finishes the season as the world’s best.
