Eugenie Bouchard concluded her professional tennis career yesterday with a second-round loss at the Omnium Banque Nationale in Montreal, falling 6-3, 6-4 to Belinda Bencic. The 31-year-old Canadian, who announced her retirement earlier this month, capped her journey with a first-round win over Emiliana Arango, leaving an emotional legacy on home soil.

Bouchard, ranked outside the top 500 on a wildcard, kicked off her farewell with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Arango (No. 82) on July 28th, lasting 2 hours and 14 minutes. She hit 18 winners and 3 aces, overcoming 28 unforced errors with a 61% first-serve win rate (33/54) to advance. However, Bencic, the No. 17 seed, proved too strong in the second round, ending Bouchard’s run in 1 hour and 22 minutes.

“It’s been an incredible ride, and Montreal made it perfect,” Bouchard said, fighting back tears as the crowd cheered her 2014 Wimbledon final achievement. The event, which she called a celebration, drew a packed IGA Stadium.

“I think it’s so special to play my last match here in Montreal on this court in front of you guys,” Bouchard told the big crowd afterwards.

Bouchard, who grew up outside Montreal, was a product of Tennis Canada’s National Training Centre, that produced many among the future generation of Canadian players (Auger-Aliassime, Bianca Andreescu etc). She then relocated to Florida at age 12, for further training.

Career high World no 5

The 31-year-old retires with one WTA singles title (2014 Nuremberg), one doubles title, and a career-high No. 5 singles ranking in 2014, earned during her Wimbledon runner-up run. She amassed $6.9 million in prize money during her career.

Overall one of the best Canadian players of all time, some of her achievements:

  • Career high ranking: No 5
  • Wimbledon finalist
  • Roland Garros semifinalist
  • Australian Open semifinalist

Outside of the main courts recently, Eugenie was also a commentator for Tennis Channel and has competed in various pickleball events, including the “Pickleball Slam” with other major, former tennis stars.
