The Terra Wortmann Open in Halle reaches its semifinals, and we’re set for a classic clash between Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev. This grass-court showdown at the OWL Arena pits the Russian’s relentless defense against the German’s powerful serve and of course, home support.
Medvedev v Zverev
Daniil Medvedev (World No. 11) has been sharp in Halle, not dropping a set. He started with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Daniel Altmaier, followed by a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Quentin Halys, and then beat Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Medvedev’s serve has been solid, and his ability to control rallies from the baseline makes him a tough opponent on grass.
Alexander Zverev (World No. 3) is finding his game on grass again. He cruised past Marcos Giron 6-2, 6-1, battled back to beat Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 6-4, 7-6, and then topped Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 7-6(6) in the quarterfinals, despite a stomach issue. Zverev’s big serve and improved movement keep him dangerous, especially with the Halle crowd behind him.
Head-to-Head
Medvedev leads 12-7 in their 19 meetings, including a five-set win at the 2024 Australian Open (5-7, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 6-3). As Medvedev’s form has been far from his best lately, it’s nice to see these two top players face each other again. They’ve never played on grass either, making this a fresh challenge.
What to Watch
Medvedev’s return game and flat backhand can disrupt Zverev’s rhythm, especially if he gets balls back consistently. His ability to save break points (100% in Halle so far) is a big factor. Zverev, however, has been serving well, with 10 aces per match in Halle, and his aggressive play suits the fast grass. The German’s home support and desire for a first Halle title can of course add some extra motivation.
Betting Odds for Zverev vs Medvedev
- Moneyline: Medvedev +100 (2.00) | Zverev -125 (1.79)
- Game Spread: Medvedev +0.5 (-112/1.89) | Zverev -0.5 (-120/1.85)
- Total Games: Over 24.5 (-120/1.85) | Under 24.5 (-112/1.89)
Prediction and Best Bet
Looking at the odds, Zverev is a slight favorite and we tend to agree, even though Medvedev has the edge in their previous meetings. That was a while ago though and the Russian has more than once struggled towards the end of big tournaments recently. Zverev is overall a better player as of late, and especially on grass. We expect a tight match where Medvedev can clinch one set but his run here in Germany will be over.
Prediction: Zverev wins in three sets.
Best Bet: Over 24.5 total games (1.85 or -120). Both players are serving well, and their history suggests long, competitive sets.
