The Magic Box in Madrid

Written by: Jonas Eriksson | May 3, 2011

ATP Masters in Madrid is under way and we have already seen Roddick and Fish crash out of the tournament. Roddick looked completely lost on the red stuff against Italian qualifier Cipolla and although he showed some fighting spirit he lost in three sets and it seems like he just cannot wait to get this part of the season over with.

Fish lost to Big John Isner in a three-set serve-fest. Isner won two tie-breaks and could hopefully turn the tide with a good showing in Madrid.

Sam Querrey is having a completely miserable season and crashed out to Michael Llodra in straight sets. It’s hard seeing Querrey coming back to winning ways right now, but maybe when the grass season starts we will finally see some positives.

In non-American news, Tsonga crushed Almagro in a match where the Spaniard was swinging so hard for the fences you would think he was playing baseball. Good stuff by Tsonga though who needs to get back on track.

Juan Carlos Ferrero is back from injury, but lost a tough three-setter to Dutch talent De Bakker. The kind of fighting showed by the Dutchman should be a good sign of things to come from him. Ferrero is definitely not a has-been yet, but I would be surprised to see him go past the quarters in a something bigger than a ATP 250 this year.

Today offers Del Potro vs Youzhny, Ljubicic vs Simon, Raonic vs F Lopez, Lu vs Verdasco, Ferrer vs Mannarino and Monaco vs Monfils among some other good matches. Be sure to tune in to TennisTV or livescorehunter.com to catch the action!
