Roger Federer defeating his eternal foe Rafael Nadal three matches in a row? Sounds almost impossible doesn’t it? But it happened with Federer’s impressive 6-3 6-4 win in Miami Open. Sealing the third title in four attempts in 2017 and an impressive 19-1 win record.
What does this mean for the rest of the season? Well, I think a few things:
- Federer is riding a massive confidence wave and will continue to perform well. He has said that he won’t be playing on clay until Roland Garros, so I think we can’t hope for too much success there, but on grass he should be lethal. Can he win Wimbledon? Yes.
- Nadal, who has played his best season in years, but been outclassed by Federer, will be starving for a title when his favorite part of the season starts. He is my favorite to win Roland Garros.
- Djokovic and Murray remain question marks with their elbow injuries. How will they recover and how strong will they be when they return.
- Nick Kyrgios is so far the brightest shining star of the next generation. His match against Federer establishes my belief that he is the most talented of the bunch of new players. Will he have the best career? Time will tell. He is still mentally immature.
What are your thoughts about the rest of the tennis season? Can Federer keep this brilliant form up? Will Nadal dominate the clay? Who of the next generation stars is your favorite to take the crown from the current top 5?
