The final of the Japan Open in Tokyo will see an expected, but interesting clash between World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and former tournament champion Taylor Fritz.

With Alcaraz being the favorite as usual, we’ll look closer at the stats and form of the players ahead of the ATP Tokyo final.

Alcaraz vs Fritz

  • Carlos Alcaraz: The top seed has had a rollercoaster week. After an early-round ankle scare, Alcaraz has managed to navigate the draw, including a tough three-set semifinal victory over Casper Ruud where his movement appeared slightly compromised at times in the opening set. The Spaniard, who got his personal-best 66th win of the season in the semis, will be going for his eighth title of the year.
  • Taylor Fritz: The American has been in really good hard-court form, following up an impressive Laver Cup performance. Fritz secured his spot in the final by clinically beating fellow American Jenson Brooksby in straight sets, with some great serving. The 2022 Tokyo champion is aiming for his second title in Japan and his third title of the 2025 season.

Head-to-Head and Recent History

Alcaraz leads the official ATP head-to-head against Fritz 3-0, including a quarter-final win at Miami in 2023 and a semi-final victory at Wimbledon earlier this year. However, it’s the most recent encounter that gives Fritz some confidence here, as he defeated Alcaraz in straight sets at the exhibition Laver Cup last week.

Predictions for the Alcaraz v Fritz final

Should be a decent match this… Looking at the whole season, Alcaraz has been the world’s best but Fritz’s momentum, past success in Tokyo and not at least his recent Laver Cup win will make some bettors think twice here. If Alcaraz’s ankle allows him to move freely, his all-around game and variety should give him the slight edge still. This is a final and we know how the Spaniard rises to the occasion in almost every event.

In the odds, Alcaraz is a big favorite at around 1.20 to win the trophy, while a win for Fritz gives the generous 4.50.

Prediction: The small injury, Fritz’s dominant serve and current form will make this battle tougher than the odds suggests.
