We’re into the red clay of Texas and the quarterfinals of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship get underway in Houston. With a heavy American presence in the final eight, the atmosphere at River Oaks is expected to be great.
Here are the previews for tonight’s best sessions, it’s Tommy Paul vs. Tomas Martin Etcheverry and the late game Frances Tiafoe vs. Alexei Popyrin.
Tommy Paul vs. Tomas Martin Etcheverry
Time: Not before 3:20 PM ET (Stadium Court)
Tommy Paul is making a quick transition from the hard courts of Miami to the Houston clay, looking to prove his all-court versatility and I think he will have a good clay season. He survived a scare in his opening round, but his ability to take the ball early and rush his opponents is still a strength.
He faces a true clay-court specialist in Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The Argentine reached the final here last year and considers this his favorite surface.
- Head-to-Head: Paul won their only past meeting just last week in Miami (6-1, 6-3), on hard courts.
- The Matchup: The outcome depends also on the court speed. If the Houston clay is playing “fast,” Paul can dictate even more with his speed and variety. If the humidity makes the balls heavy, Etcheverry might have the upper hand in many of the baseline exchanges.
Predictions and best bets: The American got a rather comfortable win in their recent meeting in Miami and has overall a higher level but this is different. Etcheverry’s comfort level on clay gives him a slight edge in what could possibly be a long, physical battle. Paul is the bookies favorite at odds around 1.40 (-250) but I like the Game Hcp bet at +3.5 on Etcheverry for 1.80 (-125).
Frances Tiafoe vs. Alexei Popyrin
Time: Scheduled for 7:00 PM ET (Stadium Court)
Frances Tiafoe loves playing in front of a home crowd, and Houston is no exception. After a slow 2025, Tiafoe has started this year with renewed energy, bringing a 16–7 season record into this match. He is the highest seed left in the bottom half of the draw and is the heavy favorite to reach the final.
Australia’s Alexei Popyrin is a disruptor though and can surprise. He is a tall, powerful hitter who can serve his way out of trouble and flatten out his groundstrokes to take time away from his opponents. He comes off a three-set win over Alex Michelsen and will be looking to score his third Top-20 win of the season.
- Head-to-Head: Tied at 1–1. Popyrin won their most recent clay-court encounter at the 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters in three sets.
- The Matchup: Tiafoe is the more natural mover on clay, using his slide to defend and reset points. Popyrin will try to keep the points short by attacking Tiafoe’s second serve.
Predictions: Tiafoe’s current form, added variety and experience in these big matches should see him through today I think. Tiafoe to win in two tight sets at odds 2.15 or +115.
