The 2026 U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston concludes today with a surprising final. On one side of the net is American star Tommy Paul, looking to complete his surface set of titles; on the other is Argentina’s Roman Andres Burruchaga, the breakout star of the tournament playing in his first-ever ATP final.

Tommy Paul has officially proven he is a man for all surfaces. By defeating his close friend and 2023 champion Frances Tiafoe in a grueling, rain-delayed semifinal (7-5, 4-6, 7-6), Paul became only the fifth active American man to reach ATP finals on grass, hard courts and clay. Despite clay being his least statistically successful surface, Paul’s game and most of all improved serve (14 aces in the semifinal) have made him the man to beat this week.
Roman Andres Burruchaga is really the “dark horse” here. The 24-year-old Argentine has played inspired tennis, dropping only one set all week and crushing fellow countryman Thiago Agustin Tirante 6-1, 6-1 in a 61-minute semifinal masterclass. Burruchaga, who entered the week outside the Top 100, has already rocketed to a ranking of No. 77. This guy is a pure clay-court specialist with a tireless baseline game that could pose a physical threat to a potentially fatigued Paul.

- The Matchup: This final will be won or lost in the transition game. Burruchaga will look to sit deep behind the baseline and extend rallies, hoping Paul’s legs are heavy after his nearly three-hour battle yesterday. Paul, conversely, will need to use his variety, incorporating drop shots and net rushes, to prevent the Argentine from settling into a rhythm.
Prediction for Paul vs Burruchaga: Paul has the experience of nine career finals and the backing of a home crowd, but Burruchaga loves these court surfaces and is significantly fresher.
