The Wilson Defyer 98 Pro (2026) is a racket that has been generating a lot of buzz among players who want some spin and pace but not the full weight of a heavy tour weapon. It’s very reactive and aerodynamic and the open 16×19 string pattern makes it easy to spin. But the frame is inherently spin-friendly and the string setup you pick can totally change the character and feel of the frame.
Over the last few weeks I’ve been experimenting with different string combinations on the Defyer 98 Pro to find the best combination of control, comfort and spin for myself and for my clients. In this range the best setups are either firm polys that maximise directional control and ball bite, or softer polys and hybrids that keep the frame lively but don’t turn it into a pingy, uncontrollable rocket. Check also our review of the Wilson Defyer P98 and P100.

1. Solinco Confidential 1.25mm (Full Bed)
If you want to tame the lively nature of the Defyer 98 Pro without sacrificing spin, the best option for players is the Solinco Confidential. Confidential is shaped, it’s a co-polymer, it has a sharp mechanical bite and a slightly lower and more predictable launch angle than Hyper-G. Confidential offers the ideal amount of control to unleash full, explosive swings from the baseline, with the Defyer frame inherently producing lots of depth and height over the net.
Most reviews allude to the point-and-shoot accuracy, incredible tension maintenance and a firm but pocketing impact feel that provides ultimate confidence when taking dead aim at the lines. I have personally tested this extensively in my Defyer 98 Pro and have also loaned it out to a few big-hitting clients who like the blend it offers.
Specs:
- Type: Shaped co-polyester monofilament
- Gauge: 1.25mm / 16L
- Feel: Firm, crisp, connected, control-focused
- Best for: Big hitters wanting directional precision, heavy spin, and elite tension stability

2. Luxilon 4G Soft 1.25mm (Full Bed)
The Luxilon 4G Soft is a great option for players who are looking for a more stable, controlled and settled set up in the Defyer 98 Pro. The Defyer frame is quick and spin friendly and a great match for the firm, precision-oriented co-poly that provides much better comfort and tension maintenance than standard 4G.
I play tested this set in the Defyer and found the stringbed seemed to be more absorbed and predictable, which was echoed by a few clients that tested it in their frames. It gives you great control, consistent tension hold and a stiffer response that is forgiving on off-center hits. This makes it a great choice for aggressive ball-strikers who want to swing out with full confidence, without worrying about the stringbed getting too unpredictable or springy.
Specs:
- Type: Co-polyester monofilament
- Gauge: 1.25mm / 16L
- Feel: Firm, stable, control-focused
- Best for: Players wanting control, tension stability, and a slightly softer feel than traditional firm polys
3. Silvester Hepta-Plus 1.25mm (Full Bed)
The Silvester Hepta-Plus is a standout option for the Defyer 98 Pro for the modern baseliner seeking a lower, more controlled launch angle and aggressive spin. It features a 7-sided, heptagonal profile which grabs the ball hard at impact, giving it immediate mechanical bite and crisp feedback off the stringbed. This is because it doesn’t give too much free power, allowing you to drive heavy topspin deep into the court without fear of over-hitting. It also rewards committed full swings.
I strung this in my own Defyer 98 Pro and passed it along to a few competitive clients who like a direct, connected tour feel. This is the best option for fast swingers who want to feel every hit and aggressive groundstrokes. It always controls the racket bed even at high speeds.
Specs:
- Type: Heptagonal-shaped co-polyester
- Gauge: 1.25mm / 17
- Feel: Firm, crisp, connected, spin-oriented
- Best for: Aggressive baseliners wanting sharp bite, controlled launch, and high rotation
4. Toroline O-Toro Tour 1.23mm (Full Bed)
O’Toro Tour from Toroline is one of the more interesting strings in their range. It played really well with my Defyer 98 Pro sessions. It’s a co-polymer designed to increase string-on-string slide and snapback, creating dramatic spin potential without the harsh, boardy feel of traditional tour polymers. It allows you to produce heavy, dipping topspin and still have a controlled feel at impact. This gives the Defyer 98 Pro a forgiving sweet spot.
I strung one up for a couple customers who wanted the high spin performance of their Defyer 98 Pro, but didn’t want to give up the comfort after testing it myself. Feedback was very positive with a modern and refined feel coming from the string bed, a clean snapback and great ball pocketing.
Specs:
- Type: Shaped performance co-polyester
- Gauge: 1.23mm / 17
- Feel: Medium-soft, responsive, slick, spin-focused
- Best for: Players wanting spin and snapback with a controlled, comfortable feel

5. Genesis Infinite Blue (Full Bed)
The Genesis Infinite Blue is a solid addition to the list for players who want a smooth power output, a slick snapback and an ultra-friendly response on the elbow. This co-poly has a super slick surface coating that allows the mains to slide and snap back with ease. It delivers a forgiving, comfortable impact and easy depth in a fast, 16×19 frame like the Defyer 98 Pro without making the stringbed feel harsh or jarring.
I have tested the setup in my Defyer extensively and passed it to a few intermediate clients who have found stiffer polys too demanding. It was found to be a lively, fluid setup that adds comfort and free power while also delivering the snapback spin to keep the shots from dipping into the court.
Specs:
- Type: Smooth co-polyester
- Gauge: 1.23mm / 17
- Feel: Soft, smooth, lively, arm-friendly
- Best for: Players wanting easy depth, smooth snapback spin, and superior comfort
Other Notables to Consider
If you want to play around with something other than these five, I have tested or strung a few other setups on the Defyer 98 Pro that are worth checking out. The Solinco Hyper-G 1.25mm is still a top pick if you want a bit more energy, brightness and a slightly higher launch angle than Confidential. The classic choice for pure tour feedback is still the Luxilon ALU Power 1.25mm, despite the fact that it loses tension faster than Confidential or 4G Soft.
If you like the control of Solinco Confidential or Head Lynx Tour but want a little softer impact feel, outstanding tension maintenance and a very predictable stringbed, Mayami Tour Hex 1.23mm is another good value option worth trying.
If you like the Hepta-Plus bite, but want a little more give, then try a Silvester Hepta-Plus / Energy 123 hybrid. This set-up has Hepta-Plus in the mains for bite and round Energy in the crosses for comfort and depth.
Final verdict
If I were ranking setups for the Wilson Defyer 98 Pro based on my own testing and client feedback for spin, control, and playability, I’d summarize them as follows:

- Luxilon 4G Soft 1.25mm for tour control with added comfort and tension stability.
- Silvester Hepta-Plus 1.25mm for heptagonal bite, low launch control, and aggressive rotation.
- Toroline O’Toro Tour 1.23mm for high spin potential, smooth snapback, and a refined modern feel.
- Genesis Infinite Blue 1.23mm for smooth snapback spin, easy depth, and arm-friendly comfort.
