I took the ASICS Gel-Resolution X out for a spin on acrylic hard courts, artificial clay and a couple of drill sessions, and was pretty impressed. It’s bloody durable, safe and clearly designed for aggressive movement so the thing oozes luxury. The Gel-Resolution series has always been a dependable standard for basic support, so I was curious to see if the Gel-Resolution X would continue with the typical tank-like heritage or veer away from it.

Fit and step-in feel
The first impression is that the shoe is very well structured and secure. The Gel-Resolution X has a custom DYNALACING setup and an updated DYNAFIT upper that wraps the midfoot more tightly than traditional lace setups for a much more secure feeling across the arch. Once tied, the shoe fit me exceptionally well, providing a more contoured fit than the Gel-Resolution 9, but with the familiar, accessible tongue entry that long-time fans expect.
Comfort wise it was soft and stable underfoot but not mushy or unstable. The Gel-Resolution 9’s cushioning is nothing like the stiffer midsole setup and offers a much softer land and launch feeling. The Gel-Resolution X has been given high marks by both the reviewers and the playtesters for shock absorption and step-in comfort, and that’s my take on the product after putting it through the mill with some serious drill sessions on artificial clay and hard courts.
On-court movement
The structured upper gives you full confidence when pushing hard laterally or recovering back to the baseline center. The shoe feels totally planted when changing direction. Grip and stability were excellent on acrylic hard courts. My movement was especially fun during drill sessions where I was loading up aggressively with my outside foot and braking hard before exploding into the next shot. The extended DYNAWALL construction allows for more fluid movement and faster repositioning, while the lateral braking power can be felt on the court, says ASICS.
It held up well on the artificial clay, with a slide that was controlled and predictable, with no twists or catches. But this shoe is characterized by its aggressive baseline movement, hard stops and hardcourt stability. However the solid base platform under my feet gave me complete confidence to use it on artificial clay.
Stability and support
That’s probably the coolest thing about the Gel-Resolution X. This shoe is difficult to construct. It is constructed and anchored without feeling like a rigid piece of plastic. It works ideal for the active person needing a wide, stable platform, rigid midfoot torsional support and locked-in fit.
Compared to other heavy-duty stability shoes on the market, like the adidas Barricade 13 or Yonex Eclipsion 5, the Gel-Resolution X offers a better upper lockdown and just a touch more plushness through the forefoot. Clever sidewall geometry and upper containment contribute to the Gel-Resolution X’s stability, unlike the Barricade 13, which uses a stiffer, firmer midfoot shank. This design element helps with the break-in and offers more comfort during long three-set matches.
Durability and the switch question
This is where the Gel-Resolution X really makes its case. The transition from the Gel-Resolution 9 is smooth but the upgrades in heel lockdown and underfoot cushioning are unavoidable. The rubber tread is the industry’s best for outsole durability, and the extended toe protection is more than enough for heavy toe draggers.
So the Gel-Resolution X presents a pretty compelling case for upgrading from your existing Gel-Resolution 9s, or switching from a heavy stability shoe like the Babolat Propulse Fury. It takes the legendary “tank-like” reliability of the Gel-Res series and adds a much smoother heel-to-toe transition and improved energy return.
Final verdict
The ASICS Gel-Resolution X is really an option among the best tennis shoes. It’s perfectly usable on artificial clay and in intensive drill sessions and performs at an elite level on acrylic hard courts. Plus, it feels stable, secure and premium. If you are looking for a shoe that can take a hard court impact, maximum lateral containment and aggressive baseline movement, then this shoe is definitely appealing.
The Gel-Resolution series has been the benchmark for stability shoes for a long time and the X model cements this position even further. If you’re moving up from the Gel-Resolution 9 or looking for a more comfortable option than the adidas Barricade, the Gel-Resolution X delivers unmatched court confidence and class-leading durability. It is still the standard shoe for baseline grinders.
