We’re heading into the second round of the US Open, here are three more matches not to miss on Wednesday 27th Aug.
Benjamin Bonzi vs Marcos Giron
Benjamin Bonzi has had an interesting season with flashes of brilliance, particularly on hard courts where he holds a 13-12 record. He recently had a strong run in Cincinnati, reaching the Round of 16. Fresh off a stunning five-set upset over Daniil Medvedev, where resilience was on display in the chaotic 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4 win. This guy can really handle the pressure. Marcos Giron, who is a very slight favorite among tennis bookmakers for this one, has struggled to find consistent form. While Giron will have the home crowd on his side, we believe Bonzi’s recent momentum and hard court win percentage give him a slight edge to progress.
Prediction: Bonzi in 4 sets.
Jan-Lennard Struff vs Holger Rune
Power against precision. Jan-Lennard Struff, with a 9-18 record in 2025, has a massive serve and powerful groundstrokes that can trouble any player. However, his year-to-date record indicates a lack of consistency. The German holds a 1-0 head-to-head edge over Rune, though they’ve never met on hard-courts.
Holger Rune, now 11th-ranked in the world, has been in decent form leading up to the US Open, reaching the quarterfinals in Cincinnati. Rune’s all-around game and defensive skills should be enough to neutralize Struff’s power and secure the win over five sets.
Prediction: Rune in 5 sets.
Frances Tiafoe vs Martin Damm
Frances Tiafoe, the 17th seed, looks to continue his strong US Open form against qualifier Martin Damm in the second round. Tiafoe, a two-time semifinalist, dominated Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3, 7-6, 6-3, serving 19 aces and winning 84% of first-serve points. Damm, ranked 431, impressed in his Grand Slam debut, defeating Darwin Blanch without dropping serve. Tiafoe is in good form though and his experience and familiarity with the big stage at Flushing Meadows should be too much for the US Open debutant.
Prediction: Tiafoe in straight sets.
