What’s in My Tennis Bag? 10 must-have essentials for every match day

Written by: Joey Pierron | August 20, 2025

Whether you’re grinding through a tournament or just hitting with friends on a sunny afternoon, having the right gear in your tennis bag can make all the difference. Over the years, I’ve created a go-to list of tennis essentials that keep me cool, comfortable, fueled, and ready for anything on the court. All of these items can be purchased on Amazon.

If you’re wondering what to pack in your tennis bag or just looking for new gear recommendations, here are my top 10 must-haves that I never leave home without:

1. SportsTrail Cooling Arm Sleeves

For those who prefer cooling sleeves over sunscreen, these are a game-changer. Not only do they protect against harmful UV rays, but they also help keep your arms cool during long matches. Lightweight, breathable, and great for avoiding sticky sunscreen on your hands. Get it on Amazon here.

2. Under Armour 6-Inch Wristbands

These extra-long sweatbands are a staple in my tennis bag. They’re perfect for keeping sweat off your hands and your racquet grip dry, especially crucial during hot days or intense summer matches. I’ll normally switch them out between sets and have 5-6 in my bag to prevent sweat from dripping on my hands and getting my grip sweaty. Buy on Amazon.

3. Tough Headwear Sports Headbands

Nothing’s more annoying than sweat dripping into your eyes during a key point. These moisture-wicking headbands (available on Amazon) are breathable, comfortable, and keep the focus on your game- not your forehead.

4. Wilson Pro Comfort Overgrips

My overgrip of choice. The Wilson Pro Comfort Overgrip (buy here) offers a soft, tacky feel that’s easy on your hands and enhances grip during long sets. I always keep a few in my bag. Find more great overgrips.

5. Honey Stinger Energy Gel

These natural, electrolyte-packed energy gels give me a quick boost when I need it most. Perfect for mid-match fatigue or post-play recovery. Bonus: they taste great and won’t upset your stomach. If you’re crosstraining, they are also great for long bike rides. Buy them on Amazon.

6. Wildlife Research Center Tote Tamer

Let’s face it- tennis bags can get smelly and gross. This little deodorizer (buy here) helps eliminate odors and keeps my bag smelling fresh, even after a long day in the heat. There are alternative options, but this one tends to work well for me.

7. Neutrogena Sport Face Sunscreen SPF 70+

My go-to sunscreen for tennis, and sports in general. It’s non-greasy, won’t run into your eyes, and holds up even when you’re sweating buckets. I always apply before hitting the court. Find it here for purchase.

8. Takeya Actives Insulated Water Bottle

This insulated water bottle keeps my water icy cold all day- even when it’s sitting on the court in direct sunlight. Durable and easy to clean, it’s a hydration must. They have a variety of sizes, I have a 40 oz bottle that works great.

9. Adidas Superlite Running Hat

Lightweight, breathable, and perfect for sunny matches. This tennis-friendly cap (here on Amazon) keeps the sun out of my face and eyes without overheating my head. Bonus points for style.

10. NonScents Shoe Deodorizer

After a few sweaty sessions, tennis shoes can start to smell… bad. These deodorizers keep odors in check and extend the life of your favorite shoes, you just pop them in after a long session and they work great.

Final Thoughts: Pack Smart, Play Better

These 10 essentials are the foundation of my tennis bag, and they’ve helped me play more comfortably and perform better on the court. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or tournament regular, packing the right gear can truly elevate your game. Check also our post on the best tennis bags.
